Harvey Milk Institute[edit]
The Harvey Milk Institute was the largest queer studies institute in the world, founded by Jonathan David Katz in 1995.[1] Located in San Francisco, the non-profit organization was named to honor the late Harvey Milk. Milk became the first openly gay person to hold public office in California after being elected to sit on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.[2] The Harvey Milk Institute provided the lesbian and gay communities in San Francisco with an educational outlet not provided by traditional educational institutions that rarely offered LGBT courses.
Timeline[edit]
The Harvey Milk Institute opened at Everett Middle School on Church St in 1995. The Harvey Milk Institute had an enrollment of around 200 students and provided 50 courses dedicated to lesbian and gay studies in its inaugural year. The institute held courses at The Civil Rights Academy Elementary School on 19th St in 2001. The institute's headquarters were located in San Francisco’s Castro District until 1998. Executive Director Kevin Schaub relocated the institute headquarters into his home.[3]
Courses[edit]
The Harvey Milk institute provided courses that focused on educating gay and lesbian individuals in San Francisco on topics that were not offered by other educational outlets in the Bay Area. Courses taught at the institute like, "Queering Culture", "Prostitution 101", and "Lesbian and Gay Parenting" educated students on sex, safety, and LGBT culture.[1] In 2001, the Harvey Milk Institute increased the amount of courses offered from 50 to 100. The Harvey Milk Institute did not provide courses focusing on lesbian sex until it increased its number of courses. The institute offered courses likes "Lesbian Sex" and "Fun With Sex Toys For Women" to be more inclusive of the lesbian community. Sex courses and workshops were not allowed to be held elementary schools. The sex courses and workshops took place at Castlebar. The institute chose to hold sex courses and workshops at Castlebar because it hosted events popular amongst the Sadomasochism community.[3]
The Harvey Milk Institute worked in community building and involvement in the queer community. The institute offered courses titled "How to Buy Your First House" and "Sewing for Beginners" to develop technical, social, and economic skills.[3] The institute offered ethics and consciousness raising courses to promote community building. Former San Francisco supervisor, Harry Britt taught a course centered on Harvey Milk's work in community building, fighting for the rights of gay and lesbian persons, and his role in raising "queer consciousness" in San Francisco.[1]
Performing Arts[edit]
The institute pushed for members of San Francisco's LGBTQ community to express themselves through the performing arts. The institute hosted and sponsored events such as the National Queer Arts Festival. Fifteen San Francisco bands created a compilation CD composed of fifteen songs called "Milkshake" supporting the Harvey Milk Institute. Proceeds from the CD release party at the Great American Music Hall to fundraise for the institute in 1998.[4]
