Guro Gjellestad[edit]

Guro Else Gjellestad (August 11, 1914 – January 11, 1972) was a Norwegian astrophysicist.

Life and career[edit]

Gjellestad was born on August 11, 1914 in Bergen, Norway. Before beginning her scientific career, she worked for an insurance company.[1] In 1950, Gjellestad earned a master's degree in physics from the University of Oslo. Her research focused on magnetic variable stars and paleomagnetism. She spent the years working 1953-1954 in the United States at Mount Wilson Observatory in California and Yerkes Observatory in Wisconsin.[2] She returned to Norway, where she researched geomagnetism at the Norwegian Insitute of Cosmical Physics beginning in 1955. She became an assistant professor at the University of Bergen in 1959. Gjellestad died on January 11, 1972.[1]
