About KDR[edit]
ReevesKD is the Wikipedia editor handle for author, educator, and speaker Keith David Reeves. His previous handle was BHS_ITRT.
Keith David Reeves is the author of Insurrection: A Teacher Revolution in Defense of Children, a work on educational philosophy and pedagogy, and of Paperless Research Writing: Effective Digital Scaffolding for Academic Writing. He currently serves as Senior Instructional Technology Coordinator at Discovery Elementary School in Arlington, Virginia, the largest Zero Energy elementary school ever constructed in the United States, as well as Chairperson of the Virginia Society for Technology in Education. He is a Certified Educational Technology Leader.
As a national-level keynote speaker and professional developer, he frequently presents on revolutionary assessment design, school design and sustainability, the criticality of the arts, and student freedom. His work and interviews have appeared in print, live media, and podcasts nationwide, including Education Week, Green Schools Catalyst Quarterly, The Council for the Future on Education, National Public Radio, and The Huffington Post.
A native of Syracuse, New York, he has taught every grade level, K through 12, in underprivileged and affluent schools in both rural and urban settings, as well as educational methods at the university level. He was a middle school and high school band director, and is now an unapologetic advocate for the redesign of schools around comprehensively meeting the needs of each individual learner.
As an educational technologist, he is the coauthor of the Moulen-Reeves Paperless Research Paper Model and has been a consistent leader in gamification, simulation, and virtual environments for teaching and learning. Mr. Reeves was the first Google Apps for Education Certified Trainer in Virginia and was the co-inventor of a comprehensive educational technology evaluation rubric that formed the basis of EdTechReview.com.
Mr. Reeves is based just outside of Washington, D.C.; holds diplomas in education from Ithaca College, George Mason University, and The University of Mary Washington; and has taught educational methods at The George Washington University. He is currently a doctoral student at Lamar University.
About Discovery Elementary School[edit]
Discovery Elementary School is a public, non-charter elementary school in Arlington County, Virginia. It opened in 2015 and is part of the Arlington Public Schools.[1] Discovery employs the Responsive Classroom model, as well as Standards-Based Instruction and Standards-Based Assessment, which includes the elimination of number and letter grades.
It is notable as the first and only LEED Zero school in the world. It is the largest zero-energy school in the United States and the second-largest zero-energy building of any kind in North America.[2] Upon opening, Discovery was the first zero-energy school in Virginia as well as the Mid-Atlantic region.[2]
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the school saves over $100,000 annually in energy costs as compared to traditional schools.[3]
Discovery's zero-energy capabilities, yielding a LEED Gold rating[4], are accomplished primarily through 1,706 roof-mounted photovoltaic solar panels to generate electricity, and features to reduce energy consumption, including high-efficiency insulating concrete form (ICF) construction and 100% LED lighting.[5]
Standards-based instruction and standards-based assessment are used at all grade levels, and a meaningful sustainability co-focus is implemented throughout the curriculum. As a result, it is a National Wildlife Federation "Green Flag" School through the EcoSchools USA program.[6]
Discovery has won a number of awards pertaining to school design and green building construction.[7]
