From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Worlds Before Our Own is a book written by American author Brad Steiger. The book was originally published in 1978 under Berkley Books. It was later republished in 2007 under Anomalist Books[1] and contains a foreword that was not included in the 1978 version. The book entertains the idea that there were ancient civilizations before the ones we currently know of. In a 2008 article[2], Steiger declares that Worlds Before Our Own is his most famous, best, favorite, and most controversial book he's ever written.

Contents[edit]

The book is organized into ten chapters. Each chapter focuses on a different claim rooted in pseudoarchaeology. These ideas include ancient giants, humans living alongside dinosaurs, ancient modern technology, lost civilizations, and Armageddon among other things.

Steiger never explicitly states that the contents of the book should be taken as fact. He instead prompts the reader to do their own research on the topics presented.

Reception[edit]

Worlds Before Our Own is very controversial. It is widely praised and also widely criticized.

Author Jason Colavito points out some of Steiger's contradictory claims presented in this book alongside his 1997 book, Star Gods: Clone Masters of the Universe. Colavito points out that in Worlds Before Our Own, Steiger "claims human culture evolved all on its own after they left without alien involvement", yet in Star Gods: Clone Masters of the Universe, Steiger claims that extraterrestrial beings traveled to earth and caused acceleration of evolution.[3]
