Joseph Jake Scanio (born in Florissant, Missouri) is an American professional baseball relief pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals organization. He played college baseball for the St. Charles Community College Cougars and Northwestern State University Demons in Natchitoches, Louisiana. After college, Scanio was drafted in the 16th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft and signed with the St. Louis Cardinals. He is currently a relief pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals minor league baseball team the Peoria Chiefs of the Midwest League.

High School

In high school Scanio played varsity baseball for three years at Hazelwood West High School in Hazelwood, Missouri. As a Sophomore he pitched 28 innings and went 5-1 with a 1.25 earned run average (ERA).[1] During Scanio's Junior and Senior years the Hazelwood West Baseball team won the Missouri Class Four, District Seven Baseball Championships. During the District Championship game his Junior year, Scanio was the starting pitcher and gave up just one run in five innings pitched in an upset victory over McCluer North High School.[2] In his senior year Scanio scored two runs to again secure a victory over McCluer North High School in the District Championship game.[3] Scanio finished his Senior season with a record of 4-1 with a 2.33 ERA while striking out 33 batters in 30 innings pitched. His performance earned him first team all-conference honors.[1] Scanio also earned a varsity lettered in soccer and participated in DECA.[4]

College

Out of high school Scanio attended St. Charles Community College (SCC) where he was a starting pitcher his Freshman and Sophmore years.[5] Scanio finished his sophomore season at SCC with a record of 7-3 and a 3.24 ERA.[6] Scanio then transferred to Northwestern State University where he attended for his Junior and Senior years. He finished his Junior year with a 1.65 ERA in 49 innings pitched. He appeared in 20 games which included two starts, winning both contests. He also ranked second all time in Northwestern State University's history for wins without a loss (6) behind Gary Johnson who had 10 wins without a loss in 1967.[7] As a Senior Scanio set a new school single season record with 31 appearance. His overall record was 5-4 with a team-low 2.96 ERA. Scanio had three saves on the year and struck out 72 batters in 67 innings pitched.[8]

Professional career

Scanio was 510th overall pick in the 16th round and the first player chosen by the St. Louis Cardinals on the 3rd day of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft.[12][13] Scanio signed with the Cardinals[14] and began playing for the Short-Season A affiliate of the Cardinals, the Batavia Muckdogs of the New York-Penn League. He is currently serving as a relief pitcher.[15] Joe pitched in relief in 40 games for Peoria Chiefs in 2013.

Personal

Scanio is the son of Ben Sr., has two brothers, Ben and Danny, and a sister, Maryanne. Scanio majored in business with a minor in psychology at Northwestern State University and his nickname is "Scanman".[7]
