Torrent of Portyngale is a Middle English tail-rhyme romance that is found in MS Chetham 8009, in Chetham's Library, Manchester, a volume that dates to the fifteenth century.[1] It is the only complete copy of this romance to have survived; the only other occurrence consisting of fragments of a sixteenth century printed version in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. MS Chetham 8009 also contains the romances Ipomadon and Bevis of Hampton. Torrent of Portyngale has not been well-regarded by scholars and is possibly a late addition to the corpus of Middle English tail-rhyme romances. Its story bears similarities to that of Sir Eglamour of Artois, although it is probably not directly derived from this fourteenth century English romance. No Old French versions of Torrent of Portyngale are known.
