User:Rickedmo/Medhursts (department store)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Medhursts was a department store on the west side of Market Square, Bromley, Kent.

History[edit]

Frederick Medhurst opened a draper's shop in 1879 and expanded throughout the next century to become a family-owned department store, before being sold to Allders in 1969.

Demise[edit]

In 1980 the store's name was changed to Allders. It has since closed and the building is partly occupied by Primark. The old F. Medhurst name is still visible carved into the building stonework.

Other history[edit]

The author H. G. Wells was born at Atlas House, 47 High Street, Bromley, which previously stood where the Medhursts building now stands.
