Alchemy is based on TransMagics “OEM configuration” or “Powerpack”

Rather than having to run the TransMagic application as a translator, it was discovered that customers simply wanted not only an “import” menu, but wanted simply a “file open” capability where their file type was listed.

Normally TransMagic tries to go to a native kernel for any given OEM, which is on the OEM’s side of thing. An intermediate format there are two PARA or STEP solid and ACIS try to go to the native kernel,

The beta is a stand-alone TransMagic-like translator, the intention is to integrate it so the “open and save” options in the Cobalt applicaiton are expanded.

Step is open, para is owned by Seimens, ACIS owned Dassault Systems (who makes CATIA, which does NOT save as an ACIS file because of object classes beyond those built into ACIS).

IGES is an open standard released in 1980 by the NIST (then known as the National Bureau of Standards).

The geometry conditioning included with TransMagic has been designed to work with the nuances that exist between different CAD systems (different CAD programs and even different versions of the same CAD program, that employ different approaches to handling a given classes of object, such as fillets to name one). TransMagic because for the most part, they licensed the different CAD kernels for each of the supported CAD programs.

Most other translators try to reverse-engineer the CAD kernel from proprietary CAD programs.

The second part of the solution is the Geometry Mapping where you map from one CAD kernel to another CAD kernel.

The third part to "condition the geometry" using TransMagic's repair technology. This technology extends and intersect slightly overlapping / misaligned surfaces, removes duplicate control points, duplicate vertices and other operations.
