Sujit Meher is an Indian Fashion Designer, born in Kalahandi district of Odisha.He is well known for reviving Traditional Handloom textile of Kalahandi called Habaspuri.[1][2]

Early Life[edit]

Born in Chichaiguda,Kalahndi district, to a Bhulia Hindu weaver family.He completed his graduation from National Institute of Fashion Design.[3][4][5]

Career[edit]

He started his career as fashion designer but later became entrepreneur, As he received trademark permission under a brand name from the Government of India to export handloom products like Habaspuri handloom,sambalpuri Handloom and other handlooms of Odisha.[6]He has made a unique mixture of Sambalpuri fabric with Mysore Silk to promote the traditional handloom across the world.According to Meher,as hailing from a weaver family he had the huge responsibilities on his shoulders towards taking Sambalpuri Handlooms to the next level with his designs and innovations.[7]

Works[edit]

He is involved with NGOs to support for important causes and actively promoting traditional state handlooms, designs, and artistic heritage through various fashion shows.[8]He started a revival project to save his homeland traditional Habaspuri Handloom through various public awareness campaigns and taking part in intiatives,as it has faced a challenging journey, battling to thrive amidst a shortage of much-needed support and patronage.Finally Kalahandi University,which is run by the Government has tied up with the young fashion designer who will design and provide the uniforms of students made from Habaspuri fabrics.[9][10][11][12]

Awards[edit]

He has received well-deserved awards for his significant contributions to this important industry.He became the first odia to receive Indian Achiever’s Award in the category of Young Entrepreneur.[13]
