LMC Healthcare (LMC) is a Canadian healthcare provider specializing in diabetes and endocrinology care and services. It was founded in 1997 and opened its first clinic in Toronto, Ontario.[1] LMC has since expanded to 15 multi-specialty clinics and 3 provinces across Canada.[2] The organization aims to provide better specialist care for those with diabetes and related illnesses. The organization also provides diabetes management and prevention education along with the usual post-diagnostic diabetic care. LMC has expanded its services from just diabetes and endocrinology care to many more, such as pharmacy, chiropody/foot care, etc. since its foundation. LMC has a research subdivision called Manna Research dedicated to clinical research focusing in multiple therapeutic areas.[3] LMC currently employs over 60 nationally renowned endocrinologists alongside a team of qualified Physicians Assistants, Nurses, Dietitians, Pharmacists, Clinical Research Coordinators, Chiropodists, Optometrists, and Administrative staff. In October 2015, Mark Angelo was appointed the new CEO of the company and is still active in this role.
Mission and Vision
[edit]LMC’s vision is to improve and transform specialized diabetes care into an accessible, comprehensive and patient-centric service.[1] The organization works towards this vision through three core mission statements. First, LMC strives to enable wellness by maintaining a high standard of patient care and customer service for everyone. Second, LMC aims to empower others through education and by sharing their knowledge with the community. Third, LMC seeks to expand the therapeutic horizon by continuously creating and advancing new techniques, tools, and therapies for healthcare.[1]
Services
[edit]LMC started exclusively as a healthcare provider in diabetes, endocrine, and metabolism. The organization has since expanded its service line to include additional services that might be required by diabetic patients. The goal was to offer multidisciplinary services all conveniently available through one specialist healthcare provider. LMC offers all of its services free of charge since it is a publicly funded organization. These specialized medical services are covered under each province's individual health care plan (OHIP, RAMQ, AHS).[1]
Diabetes & Endocrinology
[edit]Diabetes and endocrinology services were the primary reason for which LMC was founded and are offered at every location. Since its foundation, LMC’s endocrinology practice has grown to now include over 60 nationally renowned endocrinologists making it the world’s largest endocrinology group practice. Through the endocrinology practice, LMC provides care for all types of diabetes and other ailments such as osteoporosis, thyroid disorders, PCOS/menstrual disorders, and male hypogonadism.[4] The diabetes and endocrinology practices have also given the doctors and clinical researchers at LMC access to a large pool of potential participants for clinical studies.
Diabetes Education
[edit]Through the Diabetes Education program, patients are assigned with a Certified Diabetes Educator and/or Registered Dietitian to create a unique plan tailored for managing their diabetes. The education program is offered at every location. The program focuses on empowering patients to become better self-managers of their diabetes through various workshops/counselling offered both in small groups and individual sessions. The educators and dietitians can counsel patients and offer support for type 1 and type 2 diabetes, diabetes prevention and risk awareness, starting insulin, diabetes management with pregnancy, insulin pump therapy, and innovative treatment options.[5] The program offers six educational workshops[6]. Some are designed more specifically for patients at different stages of diabetes and others designed for anyone that may be interested in learning, diabetic or not.
Chiropody & Foot Care
[edit]LMC offers both chiropody and podiatry services.[7] Diabetics are commonly affected by foot problems due to nerve damage and poor blood circulation.[8] These physiological conditions often cause a loss of sensation in feet allowing small injuries to be overlooked. The foot care practice at LMC helps diabetics with common foot ailments such as foot injuries/damage, foot infections and hammertoes.[8] Patients are assessed and treated by either chiropodists or podiatrists, as both are grouped under the same umbrella of healthcare practice in Ontario. LMC’s foot care services are only offered at the Barrie, Bayview, Brampton, Etobicoke, Oakville, Ottawa, and Vaughan locations.
Optometry & Eye Care
[edit]Optometry services are offered only at the Barrie, Brampton, Ottawa and Bayview LMC locations. LMC’s team of optometrists offer various eye care services for all patients, diabetic or non-diabetic. LMC offers comprehensive eye exams, eye care for the whole family, diabetic and other specialized eye care, and eye health education.[9] LMC Optometry also carries over 50 brands of designer eyeglasses, sunglasses, and contacts.
LMC Manna Research
[edit]LMC Manna Research is a joint research branch of LMC that conducts Phase I-IV clinical research in various therapeutic areas. Together, they create Canada’s largest network of independently owned and integrated clinical research facilities. Manna Research conducts research for various different diseases and disorders but 30% of their research efforts focus on diabetes and related endocrine diseases in association with LMC.[10] Manna Research is also a founding and active member of hyperCORE International, an international network of highly experienced and accredited clinical research sites and companies. Manna Research has conducted over 1600 clinical trials to date and has an extensive patient database containing over 500,000 patients.[10]
