The Girl's Empire: An Annual for English Speaking Girls all over the World[edit]

The Girl's Empire was a periodical published by the Andrew Melrose Publishing Company in Great Britian during the early Edwardian era, from 1902-1904. It was a companion to The Boy's Empire magazine, and was overall fairly similar to other girls' periodicals of the time, such as The Girl's Own Paper. Like other annuals, it contained several short stories, poems, advice columns, and imperial news-related articles.[1] While in general it was surprisingly forward-looking in its encouragement to girls to pursue their passions, go to college, find work, and participate in sports, it also contained underlying elements which reinforced the connection between girls and their eventual roles as domesticated mothers and wives.[2]
