Scientific Drilling International, Inc. (SDI) is a privately-held, global company specializing in wellbore navigation, directional drilling, surveying and logging for the oil & gas industry. Headquartered in Houston, Texas, USA; SDI oversees offices in more than a dozen countries, including a number of districts throughout the United States and Canada. Operations throughout Europe and the Middle East are managed by its regional division, known as Scientific Drilling Controls Ltd (SDC). Applied Technologies Associates (ATA), a California navigation systems company, serves as SDI's research and development organization.

History[edit]

Scientific Drilling introduced the world's first downhole electronic steering tool for wellbore navigation ("The Eye") during its formation in the late 1960s. From the success of the product, Scientific went on to expand around the United States, acquiring a survey company and opening both national & international locations. In 1977, the world's first SRG (surface readout gyro) tool was introduced. Expansion in both product and service range continued into the late 1970s & early 1980s, during which time Scientific was sold to AMF.

From the early 1980s onward, Directional Drilling Services and Production Services (with the development of specialized Memory Production Logging tools) were introduced, prompting a global expansion of the company. In 1985, Scientific was acquired by the Van Steenwyk family. The family retains ownership to this day.

Overview[edit]

The MWD (measurement while drilling) program has seen the development of three MWD systems:

  • Mud pulse
  • Electromagnetic ("Efield")
  • gMWD (a proprietary Gyro MWD system; the most recently developed MWD system)

Scientific has established itself as the leading independent provider of wellbore navigation and directional drilling services. The company's range of products has greatly increased over recent years, due in part to continued focus on research & development.

Scientific's Directional Drilling experience includes participation in some of the most complex offshore wells in the (US) Gulf of Mexico, along with extensive land operations throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and the Far East. Coal bed methane and Shale Gas horizontals are some of the specialized services offered.

Research & Development[edit]

SDI's sister company and R&D organization, ATA, is located in Paso Robles on California’s Central Coast. 20% of Scientific's global workforce is based at the R&D facility there.

ATA carries experience in multiple fields, including:

ATA maintains a strong focus on inertial, magnetic and gyro sensor technology and development.

Scientific is the only company in the wellbore navigation/directional drilling business that builds all systems in-house, down to the sensor level.
