Thank you so much for helping with that! Would you support the suggestion of a move to "Police memorabilia collecting", because many collectors also collect peripheral items-badges, uniforms themselves, bobby helmets, training manuals... ? Thanks and happy new year! Chris 00:54, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

I am the original poster of the Police Patch Collecting article. I am new to this forum and admit my first attempt at posting here may have needed some advise or correction. I am NOT a professional wiki.

The above being said, I would rather the whole article be removed than have it altered and vandalized to the extent you folks have done which gives it significantly different meaning. You could have added your information as new information without ruining.

From my perspective as a retired California police officer, four decade patch collector, and non-profit publisher of the most comprehensive database on California law enforcement emblems in the world...you folks have butchered the facts and the thrust of the article.

The focus of police patch collecting posting was to accurately inform about preserving law enforcement patch emblem history in the US from coast to coast. It no longer does that. Police patch collecting is a subject which can stand alone.

(Patchbook 22:00, 2 January 2007 (UTC))

Brother SGGH, I appreciate your judicious and wise words. The reason I left the observation on the talk page was that he reverted the article only _after_ you spent all that time trying kindly to explain how things work around here. As your kindness didn't have any effect on him and he reverted the whole thing, and as I was just flat tired of his imperiousness, I was a bit brusque. I did take care to keep it clean, but I've been on here two years and I am tired of the playground bullies and tin gods. I didn't want you to think, though, that I did anything before your words had time to take effect, it was all after the fact. Chris 01:25, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
Please check the last comment on my talkpage-he's now physically threatened me, I need to report this to the proper wikipedia authorities, help? Chris 09:05, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

RESPONSE FROM PATCHBOOK

1. I have threatened no one.

2. I am a recognized and published expert my area, however I am NOT a professional wiki. I may have unintentionally harmed the egos of some entrenched wiki editors with my difference in style as a new user. It is obvious to me that you folks are threatened by my original article as it may have trespassed upon your wiki turf. I therefor asked that my wiki contributions be removed.

3. I could cite examples and provide quotes however I expect that your response would be that I am "personally attacking" or "threatening" someone. So I will not waste the time doing so.

4. In spite of your postings to the contrary, I find the wiki community that I have experienced so far to be closed minded and intolerant of others, which is quite contrary to your posted philosophy. This wiki demeanor has caused me to reevaluate my participation in what I originally thought was a positive and unbiased academic endeavor to make information available to the world community.

Your actions have driven me away as a new user. I invite wikipedia officials to contact me via email regarding my experience here.

I'm washing my hands of this, admins and mediation can take care of it now. SGGH 12:01, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi again, if you feel like having a break for 5 minutes from editing why dont you try my quiz

You dont have to! :-)

Dep. Garcia (Talk) (Help Desk) 16:45, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Hmm, I not sure about that answer (its wrong :-) but heres another clue: The film starred "Bruce Willis" with some other big movie star. Remember this is voluntary its just a bit of fun. Dep. Garcia ( Talk | Help Desk | Complaints ) 16:28, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Yes, it's very possible and I will do it. Please give me a day or two to work on it. I'll work on it in my userspace before putting it in the real template; you can see my progress at User:Mecu/LawEnforcement. If you have other people looking working on it they can work on it there as well. It will likely take me less time, but I just want to make sure and test it a little before putting it out there. I'll let you know when I think I'm done and have you look at it and approve that's what you wanted before copying it into the real template. Just out of curiosity, how did you find/pick me to do this task? --MECUtalk 00:08, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

Well, that went a lot faster than I thought it would. Is there a category already created you want these pages auto added to? If not, do you want to create one? --MECUtalk 00:26, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for the barnstar award. Sorry for copying it over to my userpage so fast with the first version. =) --MECUtalk 15:27, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

RFA

[edit]

So do you think I could make an RFA someday? If I address my edit summary (have done that, it prods me each time i edit now) and begin RC patrolling (I've started doing that, as well as continuing the new page patrol I was doing already), I've also archived my talk page like you suggested, my email was already linked in... I think those were the points you made? Regards, SGGH 18:18, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

I certainly think you'll pass with flying colors someday, I don't know if I'd put one in yet though. (But I'm pretty tentative about the whole RFA thing, I've made over 8000 edits and have been here since 10/05 and still have been too shy, so you may want to ask someone less neurotic about it!) Lemme see, you've not been around uber long, but six months i seem to recall is usually long enough. Have you done much WP:XFD stuff? RFA !voters like to see xfd participation to show familiarity with policies, especially deleting and consensus related stuff. You're better off if you do some active project participation, e.g. at WP:HD, WP:VP, and other stuff like that. Also, you'll want to make sure that you've thouroughly read and are familiar with the policies at WP:ADMIN, of course, as well as other policies with regard to general editing. I get the sense that folks might object based on lack of familiarity with policy in your case. Passing an RFA has gotten much harder in the past year, look at WP:GRFA to see what I mean. It's really up to you: some folks are like, 'what the hell, I'll put in an RFA now and if it doesn't pass no harm done', and others are more cautious. Folks resent if you re-request too early, so a failed RFA could hinder your later efforts. I'd support in an RFA even if you requested now, and certainly in a couple months, but I may be unusual in the amount of emphasis I put on civility and friendly interaction with other folks and the amount I don't put on things like edit count. You can lurk around RFA to get a sense of which editors are passing and if you're most similar to those that are passing or those that aren't. If I were you I'd hold off for three months and keep up the awesome work you're doing. Keep in touch and let me know if I can do anything. delldot | talk 18:52, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
That's strange, I could have sworn I replied to your question earlier. My internet connection must have died right before I hit save. anyway, here was my response: If you were to help out at WP:HD or Wikipedia:New contributors' help page you could answer other users' questions. Participating in WP:VP would mean discussing changes to policy, etc. I suggest it because I wasn't sure if you had much project namespace participation outside of the wikiproject you work on, is that right? Peace, delldot | talk 03:22, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Hello SGGH

I'll gladly take you up on your offer and let's see what happens with it. Let me know what I need to do. [P.S. I reverted the talk page to what it was.] Bachur 03:14, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi SGGH, did you get my comment to your question, on my talk page? Bachur 18:28, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Hey

[edit]

I stumbled onto your discussions with User:Patchbook by a rather random accident, and thought perhaps I might see if I can add any helpful input. First, I was wondering what you are referring to with this comment. Second, I'm going to ask at Wikipedia talk:Copyrights to try to get a more authoritative answer on Patchbook's allegation that the FBI badge image violates federal law. I don't know anything about the law he cited myself. Third, I'll try to keep an eye (as much as I can) out for uncivil comments, threats, and other violations of our policies and guidelines. Cheers, and hope I can help! --Ginkgo100 talk 20:38, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Responded on my talk. --Ginkgo100 talk 20:58, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

More on that note...

[edit]

I haven't been around the LE project much, but I just reviewed all the patchbook stuff. I've been caught up in some other wiki-conflict lately, and thought I'd offer my 2 cents. Personally, I wouldn't hold out for blocking to be a quick resolution to the conflict. There's certainly grounds for it, but the admin policy seems to be to block as a last resort, and even then it's often only for a short period of time. It seems the most reliable way to manage most vandalism is through the diligence of other editors and reverting on sight. I'm watching his changes, and it looks like there are quite a few now also watching and who are all on the same page. If we leave warnings on his talk page each time, the case for blocking will only get stronger the more he persists with that behaviour. If some admin dedicates some personal attention to this (maybe Ginko100?), all the better. In the meantime, I suggest not engaging with him as much as possible (as he seems to thrive on conflict), and any damage can be kept to a minimum. There's my opinion, although it looks like you've been handling this extremely well and with a level head. When I see these things unfolding, I always wonder how many articles could be written or improved with the same energy good editors have to spend dealing with immature or malicious behaviour. In my own experience, I've found it easy to end up spending more time on a conflict than it deserves or is required. Cheers, Bobanny 21:51, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Hope you don't mind my two cents. You're correct that admins generally block as a last resort, as per the blocking policy. The dispute resolution guidelines can give you more information on how to proceed if disruptive behavior persists. I'm going to try to give some outside views on this dispute in hopes of a resolution. --Ginkgo100 talk 22:28, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
Just like real life policing :D SGGH 22:34, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, except on Wikipedia everyone supposed to be a cop! Admins are just the janitors. :P --Ginkgo100 talk 22:40, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
Ginkgo, if you watched scrubs! Anyway, back on topic: I don't want to sink into a conflict with Patchbook, I'm just trying to deal with any disruptive behaviour that I find. Unfortunatly, as he has been involved in a lot of it recently, I think he might be starting to think I'm picking on him. Hopefully, by thanking him for the catch with the image, I'll have gotten across that I'm not meaning to... SGGH 22:50, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

WP:ADOPT

[edit]

Hi there,

As a current Adopter with the Adopt-a-User program there has been some ongoing developments that we would like to bring to your attention.

A new Adopter's Area has been created where you can find useful resources and other Adopter's experiences. Please feel free to add any resources you may have found useful as an Adopter, as well as recount any experiences that you think may help others. If you know of any useful resources for new users / Adoptees then you can add them here.

Also the way the adoption process works has changed slightly. To decrease workload at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user, on offering adoption please change the {{Adoptme}} template to {{Adoptoffer}} on the user's user page, and this will add the user to Category:Wikipedians having been offered adoption. Users that have already been offered adoption can always have a second or third offer, but by separating out those users that have not had an adoption offer yet, it is hoped that no one will go lacking.

Furthermore numerous Adopters have been adding their details to a list of users available for adopting, to offer a more personalised service and allow new users to browse through and pick their own Adopter. The quickest way to adopt though, is still to contact users at the Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user.

Finally - thanks for all your hard work, keep it up - and if you have any general questions or suggestions about the further development of Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User please bring them to our talk page. Cheers Lethaniol 14:00, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

User:Patchbook User page

[edit]

I recently found out Patchbook has made a user page, so I had a little nosey.

It mentions you a few times and that you have treated him badly.

The only way to know what i mean is to have a nosey for yourself.

Kind regards

Dep. Garcia ( Talk | Help Desk | Complaints ) 21:57, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

Well I'm sorry he feels that way. He was in the wrong when it came to vandalising those articles, and it is well documented on a number of talk pages that I thanked him for his concern regarding our image. I'm not going to bring that kind of thing up with him, he is entitled to his opinion regarding what happened. SGGH 23:28, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

I see, I'll say no more ;-) Dep. Garcia ( Talk | Help Desk | Complaints ) 16:07, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Re:RfA

[edit]

Well it sounds like you've been heavily involved in the project lately, it's great that you're helping out that much. I hope it's not taking away from your article contribution, though! I mentioned in your ER that that's one of your finest assets as an editor. Great work on improving your edit summary usage! A quick glance at your contribs shows that they're good and informative, too. By the way, you should know that some folks have brought up concerns (e.g. at WT:ER and other pages linked to from there) about "RfA preening", people being too focused on doing what it takes to prepare themselves for an RfA. Personally I think it's kind of unfair: they have all these standards to pass an RfA, then they frown on people trying to meet them. Anyway, you should be aware that folks might object if you seem too eager or something for an RfA.

I'm glad to take a look at the issue you bring up with the kettle thing, would you provide the difs of the behavior you're concerned about? My gut feeling about this is that you probably behaved fine, since I've seen no evidence of incivility from you so far, but I can offer more feedback once I see the difs in question. Don't worry about the multiple talk page posting thing, I was just saying that if you know you have two things to add you can use the show preview button rather than the save page. If you think of something else, that's a perfectly valid reason to add another post. Peace, delldot | talk 05:01, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

Police box evaluation

Hi, SGGH. I've recently done a fair amount of work on Police box, and I was wondering if you could take another look at it and see if you think it's still B-class. Thanks! —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 08:02, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

Color Africa

You stated on the Color Africa page, "The article does need to be cleaned up if the AFD outcome is keep, I can do that for you if you like?" I would greatly appreciate your assistance on this issue. Ctbrons 14:53, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

The conflict

[edit]

Well, I had a look. Here's my take on how the situation evolved and how I would have handled it. He first posted that he had a problem on Talk:Police memorabilia collecting. When he originally posted that he had a problem, I would have asked him to be specific about what the problem was and tried to figure out if there was a way to resolve the issue by negotiating (You may have done this, if so, great). To me, in looking through the comments, it wasn't clear what his problems really were. I guess he didn't want the maintenance tags, but all you could do was encourage discussion about that. If he refused, you did your best.

Similarly, it's always important to make it clear what you want, e.g. if there's a citation needed tag on there, explain to the n00b about WP:CITE and why it's useful. I saw a lot of "this article isn't encyclopedic" on the talk page, but no explanation of what that word means or what made it not meet criteria for being encyclopedic. It looks like you approached him in a friendly way and explained that it's inevitable that his articles would be edited - good. You politely asked him not to remove maintenance tags - fine.

One thing that I would be very careful about is labelling someone's actions as vandalism. Disruptive, for sure, but I'm not sure it's vandalism. WP:VAN skirts around this issue (e.g. with "Improper use of dispute tags" and "Avoidant vandalism"), but I'd say this teeters on the brink and leans toward being a dispute rather than vandalism, since vandalism is "a deliberate attempt to compromise the integrity of Wikipedia". e.g., I don't know that "editing other users talk pages or pages of a wikiproject without proper cause" is vandalism, though it may be disruptiveness. This guy seemed sincere in wanting the article to be good, if not without an agenda and a hard head. He wasn't the easiest person to deal with and it looked like you handled it politely as you could. It looks like the whole thing got blown way out of proportion, mainly by him. I also disagree with your statement that "If you want to make valid edits on wikipedia, you ought to sign up"; wikipedia is a wiki, you don't have to have an account to contribute. I do understand the sockpuppetry concerns here though.

I wonder if you could have staunched some of the hard feelings by being more enthusiastic in expressing to him that his views were important and you would make every effort to compromise with him within the scope of WP policies. But in the end there's only so much you can do if his goals are counter to those of WP. I'm still not sure what event turned him from someone that was willing to work with folks, as he initially seemed, to someone who was issuing legal threats and stuff. Ultimately it's a shame whenever a potentially good user is turned away from the project. All in all, I think you handled it pretty well. I didn't see anything blatantly inappropriate, and my main word of advice is to be very sure something is vandalism if you're going to call it that. I think you were sincere in trying to straighten this out to everyone's benefit. I'm certainly willing to discuss it further if you like. Peace, delldot | talk 20:35, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

Well I think apologizing was very big of you. It can never hurt and it usually helps to smooth things over. It shows a strong character to be able to admit mistakes. Peace, delldot | talk 23:00, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

Re: Russian-Circassian War

[edit]

Well, the number of citations is somewhat low for an article of this length (see WP:MILHIST#Citation), but that's not that big of a deal. The more significant problem is the sourcing itself; much of the article is sourced to circassianworld.com, which doesn't appear to be a good source (see WP:MILHIST#Sources). If the source being cited is unacceptable, then the number of citations doesn't really matter. Kirill Lokshin 13:48, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

Is he a reputable published historian? (The issue isn't that the content is on a website, essentially, but rather that we have no idea whether we can rely on the author to have any idea of what he's talking about. There's an underlying assumption that historical works published by a major publisher or a university press have had some vetting of either the content or the author. In the case of essentially self-published work such as the site in question, however, there's really no way of knowing, offhand, that any of these checks have been done; see WP:RS.) Kirill Lokshin 13:58, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
I would be careful with relying on him unless there were some evidence that he was a published historian. The other references seem fine, though; I would suggest trying to find some publication information for the print versions of the books, as that would be quite useful for anyone trying to look them up. Yea the new image does look good, we ended up changing it for some vigilante who thought he could take the law into his own hands. Deletion

[edit]

Hi SGGH. Could you please be a bit more careful with the deletion process? You nominated Bhagabanpur for speedy deletion with reason "notable?", but being a non-notable place is not a criterion for speedy deletion. You could take it to AfD if you like, but I think that similarly sized settlements in many countries have been considered worthy of an article, so I expect it would be kept. You have also replaced a prod tag on Bounce (game) and warned UTSAV29 for removing it, despite the fact that everyone is requested to remove the tag if they object to the deletion. Since the tag has been removed, it should not be replaced, but the article should be taken to AfD. JPD (talk) 15:55, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

  • replied on JPD's talk page, the first point is just a different POV on notability, I defered to his judgement. On the second point, the user removed the prod tag without changing the article for the better, which isn't what is supposed to happen, so personally I feel my warning was justified, but I did apologies for my lack of specifics. SGGH 17:15, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
No worries. You are right that there is an argument for not keeping the village article, but we seem to keep articles on every single census-designated place in the USA, for example. As for prod, that process is only for completely undisputed deletions, so anyone can remove the prod tag if they dispute the deletion. It isn't really good form to delete it without explaining why, but I guess we can forgive a newbie for doing that. Anyway, the tag generally shouldn't be replaced after it has been removed, so I have taken the deletion request to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bounce (game). You might wish to watch the discussion there! Thanks, JPD (talk) 17:34, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
