Mary E. Rice was born on August 3, 1926, in Washington, D.C., the second of three children of Daniel Gibbons Rice and Florence Catherine Pyles Rice. She grew up on a farm in southern Maryland. Rice’s father grew up near the Severn River in Maryland and the family visited the Chesapeake Bay frequently. As a child, Rice became very interested in marine life and determined she would become a biologist, although her training was minimal in rural Maryland schools.
