Role in SpongeBob SquarePants

[edit]

Sandy has created a wide variety of different gadgets throughout the series, as her inventiveness has gradually become more integral to her characterization. Some of her notable inventions and technology include: a rocketship, teleportation, multiverse-portal, shrink ray, and cloning technology.

Her relationships with other main characters have been expanded upon within later seasons. Her "Gal Pals" friend group, consisting of: Sandy, Karen, Pearl, and Mrs. Puff, was introduced in Season 12's "Gal Pals" episode, and the all-female friend group have starred together in several episodes since then. Sandy's occasional rivalry with fellow scientist Plankton has been showcased in episodes such as "Someone's in the Kitchen with Sandy."

History and development

[edit]

Creation and Design

[edit]

Sandy was among the initial six characters that Hillenburg developed for the show, "I knew we wanted a strong female character, so I had the idea to make her a fish out of water-only in reverse." Sandy's voice actress, Carolyn Lawrence, has recalled: "I did ask Steve Hillenburg once, 'Why a squirrel?' I don't really know if he was kidding or if he was serious, but he said he had always chased them out of his backyard and felt bad, so he owed them one."

Sandy's potential romantic relationship with SpongeBob has been altered overtime. In the series' pitch bible written by Tim Hill and Hillenburg, SpongeBob was romantically interested in her, with Sandy being described as "the apple of Sponge Boy's eye."[1] This relationship was briefly experimented with in her first two appearances, with the "Tea at the Treedome" episode and SpongeBob becoming jealous of Sandy's affection for Larry in the episode "Ripped Pants." By the end of Season 1, this idea was ultimately tossed aside in favor of them being just friends. Despite this, the Truth or Square special, Best Day Ever's "Flowers for Sandy" short, and "SpongeBob's Secret Valentine" children's-book reintroduced the concept of them being romantic interests.[2][3]

The continuity of Sandy meeting SpongeBob and living in Bikini Bottom has been changed across several projects, and is a point of contention among fans. Her first appearance in the "Tea at the Treedome" episode establishes that SpongeBob and her first meet as adults, while The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge On the Run movie and Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years series show them meeting for the first time as children. An episode of Kamp Koral titled "Kitchen Sponge" made both origins canonical through Sandy's usage of time travel. This newly-established continuity for Sandy has led to her also appearing in The Patrick Star Show as a teenager. SpongeBob SquarePants' current showrunner, Vincent Waller, has explained the creative team's willingness to experiment with the franchise's continuity.[4]

Her design has actually changed within the show's run, and is the only instance of a main SpongeBob character’s design being permanently altered. During Season One, her suit has a yellow patch with three dots on it, and her tail is tucked inside her outfit. Season Two led to the patch having a picture of an acorn on it, and a hole that allows her tail to appear outside the suit.

Voice

[edit]

During an interview for The SpongeBob SquarePants Experience book, Lawrence stated how Hillenburg's description of the character led to her using the actress Holly Hunter as inspiration for Sandy's voice, "I loved that Sandy was such a smart, capable woman. [...] Holly Hunter came to mind, and I imagined what she would sound like as a squirrel." Her callback audition for the character led to her humorously slamming a bug out of the air, which Mr. Lawrence called a very "Sandy moment."[5] Lawrence also recollected on how after she received the role of Sandy, Hillenburg "gave her an enormous pile of information on Texas, squirrels, and dialects. His passion was something I'd never seen."

Lawrence played a live-action human version of Sandy, aptly named "Carol," in the "SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout!" 20th Anniversary episode. The voice cast enjoyed portraying humanoid versions of their characters for the special, with Lawrence praising "I wanna go back and do it all over again, because it was so much fun. [...] We had a blast." Lawrence has expressed interest in creating a documentary where the voice-cast of SpongeBob meet the voice actors that dub their characters in international languages.

Reception

[edit]

Mr. Lawrence, Plankton's voice actor and writer for the series, has praised her characterization: "She is high achieving, incredibly loyal, a great athlete, and a bit of a perfectionist. Usually most of us are either book smart or we're street smart, but she's got a little bit of everything." The official SpongeBob BingePants podcast's co-hosts, Hector Nevaro and Frankie J. Grande, commended Sandy's kindness, stating that "She's so invested in making SpongeBob a better person all the time" and that Sandy's "able to be friends with every group of characters that she's with, and that it's a beautiful skill. She's not cliquey, she's all about being friends with everybody."

As detailed on the SpongeBob BingePants podcast, Carolyn Lawrence's favorite pieces of merchandise are a Treedome-themed snowglobe by Surreal Entertainment, and Van's 2021 line of SpongeBob shoes.

Broadway musical

[edit]

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical's costume designer, David Zinn, captured the essence of the characters within their costume designs, including Sandy's. He experimented with adding ears and a tail to her design, but ended up capturing the silhouette of her helmet with an afro, and turned her air suit into "a jumpsuit that was wearable but also strong and badass."[6][7]

Her singing and guitarist talents have been shown throughout the series, with songs such as "That's a Rodeo" and "Texas Song."

Sandy's family tree has been gradually introduced within the most recent seasons as well. While early seasons of the series briefly mentioned her family and only showed her ancient descendants, Seasons 12's "Nutty Nieces" episode introduced her three nieces and sister, Rosy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J17Y-4JBWks

alongside Quinton Flynn (podcast)

I was on the sidewalk in Los Feliz and ran into a woman who was casting the SpongeBob SquarePants pilot. She said, 'Oh, are you an actress? You have a great sound. I have a project I want to bring you in on. So she brought me in to audition. I got the job and I thought. How funny, after working so hard for so many years, a random meeting on sidewalk gets me a show. And what are the odds that my very first regular series in animation would be SpongeBob SquarePants? Veteran actors always made a point of coming in and recording with the cast, and those are some of my favorite memories-having Phyllis Diller or Tim Conway and Ernest Borgnine come in. It's such an amazing experience seeing them work in their craft, it is just phenomenal.

As writer C. H. Greenblatt explains, "We had to work hard to have somebody that challenged SpongeBob physically. Writer Sherm Cohen agrees: "Sandy was a difficult character to write because she's very powerful. A lot of times we had difficulty putting her in an episode because she could solve any problem right away with her inventions."

Although some gossipy folks around Bikini Bottom wonder if SpongeBob and Sandy are an "item," writer Mr. Lawrence knows the true story: "We don't really touch on romance at all. We just have the fact that they like doing physical things together, like karate. Their "romance" is through their willingness to go outside and play hard. A real romance just wouldn't make sense in the universe that they're in."

Sandy Cheeks began as an outsider to SpongeBob's universe, "A highly active woman living in a tree under a dome in a completely foreign place," as Hillenburg puts it.

She's gone on to become one of the show's most endearing characters-playing both with and against the oddballs who make up the rest of the show. May 1, 1999.

Like all of the other main characters of the franchise, Sandy has been the subject of fan-theories and speculation.

SpongeBob characters have been the subject of widespread meme-vitality, and Sandy is no exception. Notable quotes from her that are shared as gifs include: "No you ain't!," "Don't you dare take the name of Texas in vein!," and other scenes from Sandy-centric episodes like Texas, Squirrel Jokes, and Survival of the Idiots. The Category 3 2012 Hurricane Sandy also led to a variety of meme-images in relation to the character.

Why this article’s so short compared to other SB Characters, why I’m rectifying that 5+ years later

Greetings!

so…digging into the History of other SpongeBob-character articles shows that TheLastWikiBender heavily updated all of the SpongeBob characters in mid-2017, except for Sandy. (a History of his UserPage shows that he was in the middle of collecting sources to add to Sandy’s page before he suddenly stopped, for whatever reason).

I’m happy to say that I’m “picking up the torch,” and I’m in the process of getting Sandy’s article to the same length as the other ones. Like a lot of you, SpongeBob’s my favorite series, and I always found it weird that such a major character’s had her Article neglected for 5+ years. I’m relatively new to Wikipedia, and this is my first time tackling a revision so large, so if I mess up then please let me know!
