Buggy the Clown (道化のバギー, Dōke no Bagī) is a fictional character and antagonist in the One Piece manga and anime. He is a pirate, the captain of the Buggy Pirates, and a former member of the Rogers Pirates.[citation needed]

Appearances[edit]

Many years before the start of the series Buggy was an apprentice pirate on Gol D. Roger's ship with Shanks. They would often fight and argue. During a raid on an enemy ship Buggy found a map leading to treasure at the bottom of the sea. The crew also found a Devil Fruit. He made a fake fruit and ate it in front of the crew, planning on leaving the ship to sell the real one and keep keeping the treasure map. However Shanks surprised him, causing him to eat the fruit, lose his ability to swim, and drop the map into the Ocean. From that moment on he hated Shanks and he refused Shanks' offer for Buggy to join his crew.

After the dissolution of Roger's crew he went on to terrorize the East Blue. But he was driven out by the Strawhat's after losing a fight with Luffy and Nami. He vowed to get revenge on Luffy and attacked him in Loguetown, but Luffy escaped. After that he vowed to find him in the Grand Line and get revenge.

He was caught by the marines and sent to Impel Down. He broke out of Impel Down and teamed up with Luffy to rescue Ace, all the while planning to betray him. He liberated several prisoners to further his own escape and was marked as one of the leaders of the Impel Down breakout along with Luffy by the marines. The marines revealed that Buggy was like a brother to Shanks and was a former member of Rogers' Crew. The Impel Down prisoners hail him as their saviour and pledge their loyalty to him.

At Marineford he video tapes the war for the World to see and to give himself some publicity. He saves Jinbei and Luffy from Akainu and brings them to Trafalgar Law's ship. Buggy also meets Shanks again. After the War the Impel Down escapees joined his crew and he received a message from the World Government.

In Other Media[edit]

Buggy makes a cameo in the 6th One Piece movie. He also appears in Cross Epoch alongside Emperor Pilaf from Dragon Ball.

Voice Actor[edit]

He is voiced by Shigeru Chiba in the Japanese version of the anime.[1] In the English versions of the series, he is voiced by David Wills in the 4Kids dub,[2] and by Mike McFarland in the Funimation dub.[3]

Reception[edit]

Buggy has ranked highly in the Weekly Shonen Jump One Piece Popularity Poll. In the 4th Japanese Popularity Poll, Buggy is ranked the 21st most popular character in One Piece.[4] His best ranking in a fan poll was 7th place in the first poll.[5] and his worst placement was place 30 in the third poll.[6] One of Oda's SBS questions asked if Buggy's penis were also able to split and fly off. Oda replied "his penis can fly too" as every part of Buggy's body could fly off.[7] Various merchandise based on Buggy’s appearance has been created, including action figures and phone straps.

Buggy has received much praise and criticism. Carl Kimmlinger of Anime News Network said that Luffy’s fight with Buggy, “sets the series’ precedent for battles that are simultaneously tense and hilarious.” [8] Hope Chapman of the same site said that seeing Buggy during the Jaya Arc was “entertaining.” [9] Bryce Coulter of Mania Entertainment praised Chibi Buggy’s Adventure as one of the best arcs, and Buggy for his “slap-stick humour” and “Voltron-esque combining sequence”.[10] He was “disappointed” that Buggy, Smoker, and the Strawhats didn’t have a conflict at sea.[11] On Luffy and Buggy’s alliance in Impel Down, Chris Beveridge said, “The two do make an amusing pairing as their flight through the first level goes on.” He went on to say, “He never really cared for Buggy”, but the Impel Down arc turned him into an “engaging character.[12] He said that he believes that Buggy’s being set up as a regular character because he was “afraid he might lose him.” [13] Pedro Cortes of Japanator said, “Buggy is always good for a laugh, so his bit was a welcomed respite from the oppressive marines beating down Luffy and the Whitebeard pirates.” [14]
