Introduction

[edit]

P.K. Dé Villiers Secondary School is a governmental high school situated at the end of Hamphie Plichta Street in the town of Keetmanshoop, in the Karas region, located in the southern part of the Republic of Namibia.

History

[edit]

In the early 1940’s the secondary school was established at that time, but was known first as Keetmanshoop Highschool. At that period, Namibia was still as South West Africa and was under mandated territory by the former Union of South Africa (now as a republic). Because of this and that the apartheid system was established during that time, the high school was only meant to provide education for the majority of learners that belong to the white and boer communities. Throughout the years until 1978(?), the institution had renamed itself from Keetmanshoop Highschool to P.K. de Villiers Secondary School Keetmanshoop. The possible reason of this is that the school before it was renamed was founded by a South African called called P.K De Villiers. the school's is "Verbis non Verbal". It means to the school "shut up and do your work". The school's anthem has the vocality of the French National Anthem.

The schools as today

[edit]

Today, the secondary school still exists, along with three other highschools of Keetmanshoop, namely Suiderlig Highschool, St. Matthias Secondary School and Keetmanshoop Private School (which is both a primary and secondary, but not under the Namibian Ministry of Education. The school has now applied a number of over 700 school learners, both male and female and are mostly from the Keetmanshoop community, the other towns of the Karas Region and from the Northern parts of Namibia. The school's personal staff consists of the principal, two heads of department and the rest are teachers educating the learners. In addition to the staff, the school also has two superintendents for both the Horizon boys' hostel and the Conradie girls' hostel.

Within the learners, the school consists of their Students Representative Council of Grade 12. These prefects are voted every year by learners and teachers that decide who has the right integrity, capability and responsibility to become representatives and motivational leaders of the school. The school divides the learners as classgroup A, B, C and D, from Grade 8 to Grade 12. The educational subjects provided are well established under the Namibian Secondary School Certificate protocol. These subjects are related to History, Geography, languages (mostly English and Afrikaans), science & technology, Mathematics and the Business Economy of Namibia, both theory and practical.[1]

The Secondary school is much involved in sport activities of Namibia, primarily on rugby, soccer, netball, cricket, athletics and tennis. It also gets involved socially with other schools, i.e, the school has it own debate team, History club, the school choir, the Drama team members and the HIV/AIDS Awareness Club.

P.K. De Villiers has gone noticiable on Facebook.[2]
