I think we as a community need to find where the edges of WP:INVOLVED are, because I've discovered there's quite a range of positions about what it means.

I'm not looking to edit WP:INVOLVED at this point. Instead I'm looking for an un-structured discussion, with thoughts and reflections rather than votes. Custom views are very welcome, but if you're the kind of person who likes to choose from a menu, then I've tried to offer one below.

The colours are meant to indicate how permissive you are about WP:INVOLVED, so green would be highly permissive and red would be highly restrictive.

The minimalist interpretation. WP:INVOLVED means you can't close a discussion (1) You have a COI about, (2) You've !voted in, or (3) About an article you've made non-trivial edits to.

2 / 7

WP:INVOLVED means you can't close a discussion (1) You have a COI about, (2) You've expressed a view about on-wiki recently (say, in the last year), or (3) About an article you've made non-trivial edits to, or any closely-related article (such as subarticles or superior articles).

3 / 7

WP:INVOLVED means you can't close a discussion (1) A reasonable person would suspect you have a COI about, (2) You've expressed a view about on-wiki fairly recently (say, in the last two or three years), or (3) In a topic area that you've edited, narrowly construed. For example: If you've ever edited History of Berlin, then you're involved with respect to any article about Berlin's history but you're not involved with respect to, say, the history of Frankfurt or Germany as a whole; and, correspondingly, if you've ever edited History of Germany, then you're involved with respect to any article about German history as a whole but you could close a discussion about the history of Berlin.

WP:INVOLVED means what view 3 says, but is more broadly construed in contentious topic areas. For example, if you've ever made a non-trivial edit to Donald Trump then you're involved with respect to post-1932 US politics.

WP:INVOLVED means you can't close a discussion (1) A reasonable person would suspect you have a COI about, (2) If you've ever expressed a view about it on-wiki, or (3) In a topic area you've edited, and more broadly construed in contentious topic areas. For example, if you've ever edited History of Berlin, then you can't close a discussion about Germany as a whole; and if you've ever made a non-trivial edit to Lenore Romney then you're involved with respect to post-1932 US poitics.

6 / 7

WP:INVOLVED means you can't close a discussion (1) You could be accused of having a COI about, (2) If you've ever expressed a view about it or any related thing on-wiki, or (3) In a broad topic area you've edited. For example, if you've ever edited Eiffel Tower, then you can't close a discussion involving France or the French people.

The maximalist interpretation. WP:INVOLVED means what view 6 says, and even more broadly construed in contentious topic areas. For example, if you've ever made a non-trivial edit to Sri Lanka then you're involved with respect to the India-Pakistan conflict.
