Old Khorugh regional museum[edit]

Old Khorugh Museum
Khorog town, GBAO, Badakhshan

The old Khorugh Regional Museum was a one-floor building, constructed in Soviet times, located near Lenin Street. Despite its small size, it used to be the largest museum in the Gorno Badakshan region. This building had several not so large halls. At the entrance to the halls, the first thing to notice was the primitive human sitting next to the fire. The second hall had the collection of the unique flora and fauna of GBAO. Exhibits of mountain goats and sheep, like Marco Polo sheep, eagles, foxes and different snakes were most common. Exploring the other hall, one could find the Pamir house layout or in other words the Chid. In the same hall, mannequins of bride and groom in Pamirian national clothes were found. Exploring the last hall, one could see that it was confronted with Soviet era flags, pamphlets, several photographs of local and national leaders and writers of that time, like Stalin. On the wall, there was a regional map, showing mountain ranges and rivers of the region. This room had the one of the main water carriages of that time.
