Overview[edit]

the Muslim Youth Soccer League (MYSL) is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1998. With about 50 players enrolled in its first season, the league had merely four teams playing, all of which were boys' teams. Today the league brings together over 1300 Muslim and non-Muslim players, ranging from children under 5 years of age, to the men's and women's leagues. The aim of MYSL is to bring the community together, provide a safe and encouraging environment for children and youth to enjoy sports, and to demonstrate Islamic values through fair play and community envolvement. [1]

The Muslim Youth Soccer League[edit]

Objective

To foster the development of team athletics within the Muslim community while providing equal opportunity to play soccer locally, regardless of race, gender, and religious background.[2]

Mission Statement

As appears on MYSL's website:

The Muslim Youth Soccer League is committed to bring together competitive sports within a ‘United Muslim Environment’ for all members of the league. It is MYSL’s mandate to ensure that all players benefit from the game, not only from a physical/mental health perspective but also from interacting competitively with Muslim boys and girls of all different cultures, on a regular basis. As members of a rapidly growing Muslim community, MYSL believes it is everyone's responsibility to teach children to play together today, regardless of their cultural and/or racial differences, so they can cooperate, building a better Canada in the future.[3]

Minimum age to register with the MYSL is currently four years old. The maximum age has recently been extended to include adults so that people from all ages can play soccer. [4]
