History of the Magnolia House[edit]
Originally built in 1923 [2], it was the home of Edward Stein. Stein was born in Boerne, Texas November 3, 1890, the son of Franz and Agnes Pfeiffer Stein ,[3]. In 1892 his parents moved the family to Fredericksburg where Franz Stein founded a lumber business, Stein’s Lumber Yard and Planing Mill. Here young Edward and his brother Joe learned to work hard and to accept responsibility. Much of the gingerbread trim on early Fredericksburg homes was fashioned by Edward Stein, skillfully using the jigsaw his father had built, a saw which stood use for more than half a century.
Edward graduated with honors in 1910 from San Antonio Academy. He furthered his education by attending the Armour Institute of Technology in Chicago for three years. He then found work as an architectural draftsman with a San Antonio firm.
On June 14, 1914, Edward Stein married Wilhelmine (Minnie) Grobe in San Antonio at St. John Lutheran Church. After their marriage Edward and Minnie lived for three years in a home they built in San Antonio. In 1917 the family business in Fredericksburg, the Stein Lumber Company, had the need for Edward’s services as architect and contractor. Edward and Minnie decided to return to Fredericksburg and set up residence. Then in 1923 Edward designed a permanent residence for he and Minnie which today is known as the Magnolia House.
The Stein’s lived in the home for over 50 years. It then went through a few property owners after the Stein's then in 1990 a local resident purchased the home and renovated it to become a Bed and Breakfast. The Magnolia House opened for business in 1991. In 1994 the home became a Recorded Texas Historical Landmark by the Texas Historical Commission for Edward and Minnie Stein[4].
The Magnolia House was awarded a Best of BedandBreakfast.com award in 2008, 2009, and 2010.[5]
