User:Scarpy/Managing page images

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Each article in Wikipedia, and broadly other wikis using MediaWiki, may have a page image associated with it. The purpose of the page image is to return the single most appropriate thumbnail associated with an article. These thumbnails are used, for example, in the Special:Nearby feature to show a thumbnail image to the left of the record for a geographically nearby article.

While Wikipedia allows non-free images to appear in articles with appropriate fair use rational, for an image in an article to qualify for it's page image it must be (1) freely licensed meaning using the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License or a similarly free license, (2) appear in the lead section of the article and (3) meet dimension requirements suitable for a thumbnail.
