Jayce Salloum[edit]

Jayce Salloum (b.1958) is a contemporary Canadian visual artist. A grandson of Syrian immigrants from the Beqaa Valley (Lebanon) he was born and raised on Sylix (Okanagan) territory in Kelowna, B.C. After 22 years living and working in San Francisco, Banff, Toronto, San Diego, Beirut, and New York he has been based in Vancouver since 1997.

He has a wide range of practice whereas his art production utilizes installation, photography, drawing, performance, text and video, he is also known for curating exhibitions, coordinating cultural projects and leading workshops.

untitled video[edit]

The ‘untitled video’ is an ongoing video project that Salloum began working on in 1998, and showing publicly since Oct. 2001[1] at the former Canadian Musem of Civilization, Gatineau, Quebec. The project consists of nine parts (till now) of videotapes that comprise interviews of people reflecting on their conditions of living, recent history or their situation as a member of a minority. Within theses stories the protagonists represent different forms of resistance. Reoccuring topics are social and political realities such as borders, nationalism and the polarities and tension of culture, geography and ideology. The video contains footage from former Yugoslavia, Lebanon, First Nation territories in British Columbia or Cuba. Although at first glance Salloum’s work has similarities to a documentary, he does not provide any information about his protagonists, their names or background in a journalistic way. No effort is taken to create objectivity. The people presented (artists, political activists, contemporary witnesses) are telling their individual stories, sharing their perspective and emotions in an intimate environment with the artist. Their stories are sublemented by experimental visuals. This archival and anthropological approach was seen as preserving the ‘history of the present’ by Jen Budeney[2]. (-> footnote catalogue).

An arrangement of screens continously playing the looped tapes in an exhibition space creates an atmosphere of visual contrast or mutual existence. These varying installations lead to the experience of the underlying subjecitvity of individual perception. 

untitled photographs[edit]

'Untitled photographs' is the umbrella term for a series of photographs. These include 'location/dislocations'[3] (1996- ongoing), subjective affinities[4] (2004- ongoing) or TO THE TRADE (1988 -1998).  Salloum’s research and archival practices are a reccuring theme, visualized within a street photography snap shot aesthetic[5].

The series 'locations/dislocations'[6] depicts urban, suburban or so-called natural environments, exploring the construction of these terms and a way to visualize them. Salloum finds his subjects in shop windows, street scenes or natural environments while traveling or in his current place of residence. The natural objects appear to be untouched but at second glance they are influenced by the human presence.[3]

The installation '(Kan ya ma kan) There was and there was not'[7] (1988-1998) analyses perceptions of Lebanon[8]. Salloum presents his research to a subject that holds personal meaning for him. Consisting of photographs, videotapes, books, postcards, calendars, maps, files, objects collected in Lebanon, this work shows a collective imagination without denying the individual and subjective understanding. A table with gloves, books, folders and various other materials gives the impression of a scientific research studio. Salloum is focusing on three main topics: Analyzing how the pictures of Lebanon have been used from the west and the middle east. He makes reference to specific points in the history of Lebanon and public figures or personal contacts. In addition, he reflects about his own subjective relationship to the country. Salloum questions our idea of research and history methodology and the steps taken in order to understand another culture.

Public Art[edit]

Artist Jayce Salloum displayed a selection of his 'untitled photographs' series on different transit shelters in the city of Vancouver[21] in 2016. This installation was part of the cities public art program Coastal City.

Workshops[edit]

Salloum taught a variety of classes and led several workshops. In 2007 he began an art project for native youth together with Meeka Morgan[22] in Vancouver. At the international summer academy of fine arts in Salzburg he was invited to be in charge of the photography class in 2015[23].

Awards[edit]

Salloum was given the Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts[24] in 2014 and he is a finalist of the 2016 ScotiaBank Photography Award.
