John Lewis Coster (1838 - 17 December 1886)

Coster was born in 1838.[1]

Political career[edit]

The nominations for the 1884 general election in the Heathcote electorate took place on 16 July.[2] The 22 July election was contested by the incumbent Henry Wynn-Williams, Coster and James Fisher. They received 245, 445 and 15 votes, respectively.[3] Coster was thus, with a majority of 200 votes, elected to represent Heathcote in the 9th New Zealand Parliament.[4]

Succeeded by Frederic Jones[5]

-NZETC- represented Heathcote in the House of Representatives from 1884 to 1886. For many years he held the responsible position of manager of the Bank of New Zealand in Christchurch, and was highly esteemed in business circles and in private life. Mr. Coster took an active interest in the New Zealand Shipping Company, which he was instrumental in founding.
