George Payling (25 May 1854 – 20 August 1909) was Mayor of Christchurch 1907–1908.[1]

Payling was born in
His parents were George Payling (a gardener) and Mary Ann Payling (nee Oliver; 4 December 1832 – 9 July 1911). His mother remarried to John Baldwin (1840 – 11 January 1909). They emigrated to New Zealand in 1874 on the Northampton. The Canterbury provincial government had sent a request to Lord Lyttelton, the former chairmen of the Canterbury Association, to send 'high grade' primary school teachers to Canterbury. John Baldwin was chosen as part of this scheme.[2]

Death[edit]
Payling died on 20 August 1909 at his residence near Bealey Avenue[3] and was buried at Linwood Cemetery three days later.[4]

I have just completed looking up the Christchurch Mayors and we have another one in Linwood Cemeter - George PAYLING - died 20/8/1909. He is located Block 22 Plot 97.
