I suggest we form a consensus and then do a WP:Edit requests.

I'd like to see the following:

WP:Questions

  1. make clear IRC is not official help but run by volunteers
  2. state "new users should read guide and having understanding before joining"
  3. link to WP:IRC for new user guide

WP:IRC

  1. state Wikipedia's core principles
    1. reaching consensus through discussion
  2. highlight how Wikipedia and IRC differ
    1. different time frames
      • Wikipedia discussions can take days or weeks
      • IRC discussions take seconds or minutes
    2. Wikipedia everything documented while IRC has no records
  3. new user guide (at top of page)
    1. remind help channel is not official
    2. remind all members should have equal say
    3. remind some members have more mastery of WP rules
      • warn don't let users WP:LAWYER you - ask to explain if you don't understand
    4. warn mods should not take unilateral action
      • in case of disagreement, ask to post to article or user Talk page
    5. remind user must also compromise
    6. remind of Wikipedia:Teahouse
  4. admin guide
    1. remind avoid powertripping - should not spend majority of time doing admin stuff
    2. remind no ganging up - WP time vs IRC time (see above)
    3. prefer not to take direct action on Wikipedia from IRC
      • start discussions on Talk pages instead
        • process sometimes takes days, weeks - give other users time to reply on Wikipedia
    4. avoid WP:LAWYER
    5. all requests to post on Talk page should be honored
  5. process for making on-wiki changes
    1. fully document on Talk pages
    2. tag "IRC" in summary
  6. posting on other users pages after on-wiki action
    1. don't drive-by tag...take time to summerize in your own words
    2. be willing to respond to pings and engage in conversation
