Jeremy Jahns (born May 8, 1981) is an American film critic and YouTuber. Jahns has reached over 1.63 million subscribers and over 625 million views on YouTube. Jahns is considered one of the leaders of modern day film criticism, alongside Chris Stuckmann, despite Jahns's insistace that he is not a film critic. Jahns was also the host of Collider streaming service show Awesometacular with Jeremy Jahns on go90. Jahns is also a certified critic on Rotten Tomatoes, a fact he was unaware of and pointed out in his review of Dave Chappelle's comedy special Sticks & Stones.[2]
Early life[edit]
Jeremy Jahns was born in Seattle, Washington on May 8, 1981. Before joining YouTube, Jahns had jobs as a projectionist in a movie theatre and a retail manager. Jahns has often regarded his time as a retail manager negatively, stating that the job required him to act like someone that he wasn't and didn't want to be.[3] Growing up, Jahns was a fan of Star Wars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Spider-Man and Terminator. Jahns often incorporates his childhood Star Wars Curtain Cape into reviews for the Star Wars films.
Career[edit]
Jeremy Jahns' YouTube career began in 2009 with a review of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen on his original channel Movieman191. Later that year he transitioned from that channel to his current channel.[4] For the longest time, Jahns' most popular video was about the Mayweather v Ortiz fight. Currently, Jahns' most viewed video is his review of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, currently standing at 2.79 million views and was the #1 trending video worldwide when it was first published for 24 hours.[5]Despite often being recognised as one of the primary leaders in modern film criticism, Jahns has often disregarded the term of "film critic". He refers to himself as just a guy who enjoys watching and talking about movies.
In Februrary 2016, Jahns hit 1,000,000 subscribers on YouTube, becoming one of the first channels solely dedicated to film review to reach such a goal.[6] As of July 2020, Jahns' channel has obtained over 1.79 million subscribers, and 674.9 million channel views.[7]
In late 2016, Jahns moved to Los Angeles and joined Collider for a year. During this time, Jahns hosted the streaming show Awesometacular With Jeremy Jahns on Verizon's go90 streaming platform. Jahns had previous experience with hosting internet shows having been the host of Screen Junkies Plus series Movie Games. Jahns was also a member of Collider's Movie Talk program, and was partially responsible for one of the program's most iconic moments where he struggles to keep his composure listening to Jon Schnepp tearing into a movie synopsis.[8][9] After a year of being a part of the Collider team, Jahns moved back to Seattle to be closer to his family.
Jahns' upload schedule changed drastically in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, uploading on a more regular day-to-day basis as opposed to his normal weekly upload schedule around movie releases. During this time, viewers began to point out physical similarities between Jahns' look during quarantine to actor Keanu Reeves. While not the first time Jahns has been compared to Reeves - even portraying the character of Neo for CineFix's Homemade Movies as well as stating in an earlier Q&A video that he would love if Reeves portrayed him in a movie - the similarities between the two became a brief internet meme based on a YouTube comment that stated "[Jahns] looks like John Wick but decided to get a cat instead of a dog".[10] Throughout the pandemic, Jahns has primarily been reviewing older films from the 1990's such as Speed, Broken Arrow and Independence Day, as well as reviewing newer movies and films he had not seen such as The Raid.[11][12]
Jahns occasionally incorporates other styles of videos on his channel. In 2017 Jahns started a shortlived series called "Tales From the Comments Section" where he would go through the comments sections of his videos and respond to them. Throughout all of 2019 Jahns started a monthly vlog series. In 2020 Jahns began a new series showcasing possible alternate dimensions with different versions of movies, including Colin Trevorrow's version of Star Wars Episode IX and an alternate dimension where Batman and Robin is viewed as a classic.
Rating Scale[edit]
Jahns is notable for his unconventional film rating system. Rather than grading films with a score or letter-grade, Jahns instead grades films based on a collection of phrases such as "It would be a lot better, if you're drunk" or "Worth Buying on Blu-Ray". The ratings range from the highest grade of "Awesometacular" to the lowest grade of "Dogshit". The second-highest grade being "Worth Buying on Blu-Ray" and the second-lowest rating being "You're Not Gonna Remember it in T-Minus 1 Day". The remaining two ratings of "A Good Time, No Alcohol Required" and "It Would Be A Lot Better, If You're Drunk" have been known to be descriptive in both positive and negative lights, particularly with the grading of "If You're Drunk". This is meaning that a movie's enjoyment could be bettered with alcohol, or the movie is enjoyable enough on it's own, and would be fun to enjoy under the influence. Due to apparent confusion surrounding the rating system, Jahns uploaded a video in early 2018 explaining his rating system to confused casual watchers or new viewers.[13]
