Mrs. Sukhada Kane (Hindi: सुखदा काणे) is an Indian classical vocalist of the Jaipur, Agra,[1] and Gwalior gharanas.[2][3] She is both a performer and a teacher.

Lineage and training[edit]

She started her training at a young age from renowned singer of Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, the late Pt. Anandrao Limaye.[3][4] Later, while Sukhada pursued her M.A. in music,[3] she received training from the late Kamal Tambe of Jaipur-Atrauli gharana [3][5](disciple of Mogubai Kurdikar). Sukhada also received training from Dr. Prabha Atre[3][5] and Meenakshi Mudbidri[3] while at SNDT Women's University.[3][6]

After marriage, She started training from her father-in-law Sangitacharya late Pt. Kanebuwa.[3][4][5] Sukhada's training under Pt. Kanebuwa was focused on Agra gharana and Gwalior gharana gayaki.[3][7] After the demise of Pt. Kanebuwa, Sukhada continued her training from his disciples Pt. Narendra Kanekar,[3] Balasaheb Tikekar and J.V. Bhatkhande Buwa.[6][7]

Sukhada has been performing across many platforms across Maharashtra[3][8] and outside such as:

Alladiya Khan Smruti Samaroha,[5][9][10] Rahimat Khan Smriti Mahotsav, Ustad Vilayat Hussein Khan Sangeet Sabha,[11] Pannalal Ghosh Smriti, Dadar Matunga Cultural Centre,[12] SwarSadhana, N.C.P.A. Mumbai, Gharana Sammelan, Pt. Balakrishnabuwa Ichalkaranjikar Smriti Mahotsav.[6][13]

Sukhada has also performed numerous times at Deval Club Kolhapur including: Centennial Silver Jubilee Ceremony of Deval Club,[1][2] Nav Kalyan Rang (themed on Kalyan Based Raags), and ‘GuniGovind’- A musical tribute to late Govindrao Tembe.[14]

In addition, Sukhada has received Late “Sushilabai Gaanu Award”, awarded by Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalay Mandal.[6][15]

Teacher[edit]

Sukhada was connected with Shivaji University Music Department and Deval Club of Kolhapur[16] as a classical music teacher for some years. Sukhada has reciprocated her skills and hard work towards her disciples; one of whom recently achieved All India First Rank at Sangeet Alankar of Gandharva Mahavidyalay. Many of her disciples now perform,[17] on stage and at All India Radio. In addition, she has been a judge for some music competitions.[16]
