Audre Lorde is a Poet, essayist,writer and feminist among many other roles; she was born in 1934 in new York city. Lorde began writing poetry in high school when she started writing but her first piece was published in seventeen magazine. In the 1960's Lorde began publishing her poetry publicly on her own. Her poems spoke about racism and empowerment some of her poems are "Survial of Roaches" and "There is more of one way to skin the Coon". Among her many titles she was also very active helper in ending discrimination and oppression involving women. She was a big activist in women's empowerment. She supported many women groups founded different women groups like Women of color press as well as sisterhood in support of sisters. Lorde was also a graduate of Hunter College as well as Columbia University. As well as an English professor at Hunter College. Lorde was also battled fourteen years of cancer she was first diagnosed with breast cancer in the year 1978 and later with liver cancer in 1984. through her battle with cancer she still continued to keep an active role in social and health problems. In the year 1991 she received the Walt Whitman citation of Merit an award that recognizes great poetry. After a long battle with cancer she died in the year 1992.
