Biography

She was born and brought up in a Joint middle-class family consisting of eleven members. Aarti Pathak is her mother, a housewife and role model for her. Father Mr. Rajesh Pathak is a businessman and supported her dream mortgaging their house to climb Mount Everest. Raghav Pathak, her brother, helped at every step to fulfill her aspiration.

Early life

She joined Gomti Devi Vidhya Mandir and completed her 10+2 from there located at Saat Road Cantonment, Hisar. Presently, she is pursuing her BA from Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila Vishwavidalaya, Khanpur University, Sonipat. Hobbies She loves listening to Music, Dancing, Travelling and Exploring new places. Inspiration for Mountaineering She got inspiration take up mountaineering from her Mother. Once she searched Google and found nothing about herself and asked her mother playfully, “who get listed on Google.” Her Mother said, “JO PAHAD CHADTE HAIN” means who do great tasks in life. She took this phrase seriously and started searching a lot on mountaineering. Seeing her zeal, Mother took her to watch the biopic of “Arunima Sinha, the first amputee mountaineer of India” [3] which motivate her further. On a Rishikesh Vacation, she did an 83 m bungee jumping at the age of 14 years surprising her parents, and it helped to win her parent’s confidence and consent to kickstart her career in mountaineering.

Planning and Training

Choosing a career in mountaineering isn’t approved by the society nor thought to fit an Indian girl. Even half of her family members were not aware that she was pursuing a Mountaineering course until she got the permit letter to scale Mount Everest. She was trained at Jawahar Institute of mountaineering and winter sports (Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir) and Himalayan mountaineering institute (Darjeeling) [3].

Success on Mount Everest

On 16th May 2018, Shivangi Pathak becomes the youngest Indian women [1] to have climb Mount Everest at a tender age of 16 years and 10 months. Climbing Mount Everest of such altitude was not an ordinary feat for a teenager, and she got the “The Eagle of Mountains” [4] title.

Incidents in Climbing Mount Everest

Scaling the Everest isn’t free of hurdles owing to adverse climatic conditions and steep terrains. But, her determination to achieve something great helped her to fight odds well.

While climbing upward from Camp 4, her oxygen cylinder had almost finished which led to severe problems. She further lost her walkie talky in the mountain. Unable to send messages to the agency, a rumour spread quickly that “the 16 years old girl from India is missing” and missing is assumed as died in the language of mountaineering.

Few Facts of Mt Everest

Mountain Everest is the highest mountain on Earth with a height of 8,848.00 metres (29,028.87 ft). It is situated in the Himalayas, the highest mount range in the entire world. The peak is situated on the border of Nepal and China. The summit is present above a Death Zone, the point where the air is too thin for a human being to live, which is 7, 600 metres (24, 900 ft) above the sea level. So, compressed gas cylinders consisting of different gas mixes for various altitudes are used in the climbing. There are two “Base Camps” present on North and South part of the Everest. The South Base Camp is in Nepal at the height of 5, 364 metres (17, 598 ft) and North Base Camp is in Tibet at 5, 150 metres (16, 896 ft). These camps are used by mountaineers to get supplies, rest and heal to prepare for their trip, in the up and down journey. Staying in these base camps help climbers to adjust their body to the thin air to reduce risk and altitude sickness. Many Sherpas are involved in shipping supplies to the South Base camp using Yaks. The area has an adverse climatic condition. It remained frigid and covered with snow with wind can speed up to 177 mph (285 km/h).

After the Climb

On 16th May 2018, at 8:21 AM in the morning, she had conquered the Mt Everest and become the youngest woman from India to achieve this. She hoisted the Indian National Flag at the summit of the peak and made India proud. She sent a message to every young Indian especially girls "They (women) can achieve anything if they desire. If I can make it, if Arunima Sinha (first Indian amputee to climb Mt Everest) can summit the Mount Everest then they can do anything," Seeing the indomitable spirit of this India’s daughter, even The honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Singh Modi Ji has praised her achievements as ‘stupendous accomplishment’ [2] in his monthly “Man Ki Baat” address to the nation

Success on Mount Kilimanjaro

On July 2018, Shivangi has also scaled Mount Kilimanjaro [5] in just three days of climbing with her crew. She has started her journey from the Marangu route on July 21 and reached the summit on July 24, 2018. It is Africa’s highest point and tallest free-standing mountain in the world situated in North-eastern Tanzania with a height of 5, 895 metres. From the “Roof of Africa,” she had sent a special message of “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” and women empowerment that they can battle and overcome odds with willpower.

Successful climb to the Mount Elbrus

On 4th September 2018, she had completed her third summit to Mount Elbrus [6], which is the highest mountain in Europe with a height of 5642 meters. It is situated in the Caucasus Range of Russia and the 10th most prominent peak in the world.

Shivangi's Mission of 7 Summits

She is on a mission to scale the seven highest summits located in each continent before her 19th birthday. She has already conquered three mountain peaks: • Mt Everest (8848 m) • Mt Kilimanjaro (5895 m) • Mt Elbrus (5642 m) Her future mission: • Mount McKinley (6194 m) • Mt Vinson Massif (4897) • Carstensz Pyramid (4884 m) • Mt Aconcagua (6962 m)
