Shling00/Elisabeth Wollman

Elisabeth Wollman (1888‑1943) was a French biologist of Russian Jewish origin. She died during deportation to Auschwitz.

Biography

Elisabeth Michelis was born on 15th August 1888 to a Jewish family in Minsk (Russian Empire).

She studied physics at the University of Liège, then moved to Paris where she married Eugène Wollman in 1909.

On the 4th December 1943, Wollman was arrested at her family home at 12 rue Olier in the 15th Arrondissement of Paris. She was deported to Auschwitz with her husband Eugene Wollman on the 17th of December 1942 by convoy 63. The two died in transit from the Drancy internment camp to Auschwitz.

Elisabeth Wollman is the mother of Élie Wollman, professor and deputy director of the Pasteur Institute from 1966-85.

Career

Wollman collaborated voluntarily at the Pasteur Institute, first in the laboratory work of Jacques Duclaux (1910‑1920), then in the scientific work of Eugène Wollman (1915, 1923‑1943).

Tributes

• A plaque to commemorate Eugène, Elisabeth and Élie Wollman, on the the facade of the Émile-Roux pavilion of the Pasteur Institute in Paris was unveiled on 23rd September 2009. Members of the Wollman family and Professor Alice Dautry, Director General of the Pasteur Institute were present at the ceremony.
