Metro Prep Academy short for (Metropolitan Preparatory Academy) is a coeducational private school for both middle school (grades 7-8) and high school (grades 9-12) students. The school was founded in 1982 by William Wayne McKelvey and is located in Toronto, North York area. Class sizes are very small and range from 10 - 20 students as Metro takes both a modern and personal approach to education. There are no uniforms, however, dress codes are in effect. The school consists of regular teaching classrooms along with a science laboratory, 3 computer rooms, art room, cafeteria, library, gymnasium, and weight and fitness room.
Admissions
[edit]There are 4 steps to the admission process for Metro Prep Academy.
- Interview The first step of admission is to have an interview with the principal and prospective student and his or her parents. This will determine the suitability of the school and allow for you child to express academic goals, and personality.
- Supporting Documents When attending an interview the following documentation is required:
- Most recent report card
- Final report cards for the last two academic years
- Any available educational/psychological assessments
- Testing
- Grades 7-9
- After interviews take place, and if your child could be a Metro student the process moves forward. Students are required to complete an entrance examination in order to identify the child’s abilities in the following; mathematics, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and reading. A cost of $250 is charged for students to write the test.
- Grade 10-12
- Students are admitted based on previous academic records that have been submitted.
- Admission Decisions The last process of admission is when your child may be offered admission. In order to accept, registration forms must be completed.
Extra Curricular Activities
[edit]Metro has a range of extra curricular activities for students to involve themselves in. Activities include caving, white-water rafting, mountain biking, theatre trips, dog sledding expeditions, science camps, clubs (music, debating, fishing, robotics, chess, art, etc), theatrical productions, trips to Ottawa, Quebec City, New York City, Washington DC, and West Virginia. House teams are created to encourage students to participate in events such as amazing race, dodge ball tournament, fundraising, spirit week, etc. Student are placed on a team with a 2 senior students representing the house mother and father. Teams compete against one another in competitions and events throughout the school year and are awarded points. At the end of the year all points are tallied up and a winner is announced. Teams consist of: Mackenzie (Black) Monaghan (Purple) Dublin (Yellow) Cork (Red) Meath (Orange) Conamera (Pink) Galway (Blue) St.Patricks (Green) Kildare (White).
