SIGMUND DE SOUZA[edit]

Sigmund de Souza, 43, is a well known journalist, singer-songwriter, and Gaunkary (Comunidade) activist from Goa, India. He owns a weekly newspaper called 'Goa Messenger'.

ABOUT GOA MESSENGER[edit]

Goa Messenger focuses on success stories of people who can serve as a source of inspiration to younger Goans, who often desire to leave their land for a foreign shore. Its emphasis is on plugging the brain drain and instilling in young Goans a sense of self-belief and pride in their roots and cultural identity.

Goa is one of the smallest states in India. It was ruled by the Portuguese from 1510 till 1961 when it was conquered by the Indian Army and declared a Union Territory of the Republic of India. Goa is made up of 223 unique heritage institutions called Comunidades (original name - Gaunkary) which have been in existence since time immemorial. They were village republics. Post the so-called Liberation of Goa in 1961 these institutions have been facing the threat of extinction because of hostile and destructive laws enacted by the State government.

ABOUT HIS MUSIC[edit]

As a singer songwriter Sigmund has performed in different parts of his state and has a growing fan following. his songs are inspired by the beauty of his homeland and the events that continue to affect its history and that of its people. Sigmund has been writing songs since the age of 8. He says it's a gift from God. His two concerts held in Panjim an Margao in May 2009 titled "Sigmund and Friends" were an outright success and received critical acclaim in the local media. Sigmund is currently working on releasing his solo album comprising songs he has written/composed since the age of 14.
