Elizabethan London was the name given to the era during the rule of Queen Elizabeth (1558-1603). This was also considered a high point in the development of England and the Tudor rule. During this time in London, several changes in society took place mainly in the city. These changes not only affected the city, but it also influenced many of the views and beliefs of this society.

Entertainment[edit]

Before this time, entertainment such as plays were found wrong and in many ways unreligious. Fortunately, society began to to view this differently. As a result, many great plays such as William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet began to become very popular.

Science[edit]

Johannes Kepler was a major scientist during the Elizabethan Era.

London also experienced many advancements in the field of science during this period. During the Elizabethan Era, many new technologies and theories were being discovered, proven, and unproven. Unfortunately, many of the great inventors such as Francis Bacon had not been born yet. Nonetheless, many great inventors took their place such as Johannes Kepler who worked to prove new ideas and theories to enlighten the world. Johannes Kepler discovered many things throughout his life, but he was most known in England for his law of planetary motion. Scientific improvements like this began to appear and change the views of some people. This allowed many individuals to become more educated and have a better view on the world and the things in it.

Education[edit]

Another major development that took place in London involved education. Prior to the Elizabethan Era the people who received an education were mainly the rich and upper class. Fortunately, England started to promote education even more. This allowed more individuals, which included the poor, an opportunity to improve their education. Unfortunately, the only people that were permitted this education were young boys. As a result of this new development, many new areas were explored and studied, especially in the area of science.

Religion[edit]

Before this time the largest and most predominant religion was Catholicism. Many changes began to appear regarding other Christian denominations. As these denominations grew, many started to view the Catholics harshly. England was one of the first countries to have this view of the Catholic Church. This gave people a new perspective on religion and a chance to grow and explore other denominational churches. Prior to this development any view other than Catholicism would not have been tolerated by the Catholic Church. This development not only gave people a new perspective on religion, but it also allowed for the expansion of new beliefs and lifestyles.
