May Long

Born in la Ronge, Saskatchewan, in 1827 and died in 1916 at 89 years old. Born to Chinese immigrant Parents, May Long learned how to be both a proficient farmer and clever inventor. Miraculously overcoming polio at the age of 9, she went on to become a world class sled dog racer and led her team to win the first international sled dog championship. This was important, not only because she was a woman, but she was also an Asian polio surviver. After this she seemed to live a charmed life, having filed over 13,000 patents for inventions that she made very little profit from. Her intention was for a better society, not to become wealthy. Thanks to May Long, We enjoy many modern day conveniences and delights such as; buttermilk, leather covered sports balls, Artificial Christmas trees, snorkels, clip on earrings and other assorted clip on jewelry...ect. It is because of May long that she is celebrated for an entire weekend in May.
