Seibukan Jujutsu (Sei = correct, Bu = martial discipline, Kan = House. House of correct martial arts) is a style of the martial art jujutsu developed by Julio Toribio on June 1st, 1993. Despite ancient Japanese roots and traditions, Seibukan boasts being developed for modern self-protection. The focus of unarmed techniques incorporate escaping, throws, chokes, grappling, joint locks, counter techniques, and ground defense. The weapons of Seibukan Jujutsu include jo, bokken, katana, tanto, and tambo, among others. There is equal emphasis placed on mental and physical training.

The Seibukan Jujutsu headquarters is located in Monterey, California.

History[edit]

Julio Toribio began studying the martial arts at age 13. Throughout the years, he studied and achieved black belts in Okinawan Kempo Karate, Aikido, Hakko-Ryu Jujutsu, Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu/Ninjutsu and Enshin Itto Ryu Battojutsu. He began his study of Hakko Ryu Jujutsu in 1981 and continued training until he reached the highest level, receiving the title of Menkyo Kaiden Shihan Sandaikichu in 1991. Toribio became the fourth Hakko-Ryu teacher with this title in the United States.

Vigorously seeking exposure to martial & healing arts, Julio Toribio has experience in: Jujutsu, Judo, Ninjutsu, Daido and Aikido from Japan; Hwa Rang Do, Kuk Sool Won and Hapkido from Korea; Chin Na, Tai Chi and Shuai Chiao from China; Arnis and Eskrima from the Philippines; and the most ancient of all, Kalaripayit from India. All these and more have contributed to the formation and development of Seibukan Jujutsu.

Aware that times had changed and arts need to evolve, Julio Toribio could no longer continue the path of the old traditions and strict rules. On June 1st, 1993, he officially announced the founding of Seibukan Jujutsu.

Philosophy[edit]

There are three fundamental principles in Seibukan Jujutsu: Awareness, Assessment and Action. Awareness is the act of being mentally and physically present in the moment. Assessment pertains to the process of gathering information about the surroundings and inner-self in a physically or emotionally demanding situation. Action is the result of making a decision to alter or accept a situation.

Seibukan Jujutsu uses three forms of action to alter a situation: No Challenge, No Resistance, and No Injury. No Challenge means avoiding a physical confrontation whenever possible. No Resistance means avoiding the use of force. No Injury means the confrontation became physical and the Seibukan Jujutsu student uses only what is necessary to control and subdue the attacker without unnecessary violence.

The practice of Seibukan Jujutsu incorporates three elements for application of techniques: Distraction, Angles and Leverage. Distraction takes the mind of the attacker to a place in his body, away from where the technique is to be applied. Angle is an area of weakness, found in every technique as a third point of triangulation, which can be used to unbalance the attacker. Leverage is applied by finding the attacker’s center and aligning it with the third point of balance, leverage can be created to bring an attacker to the ground.

Seikendo[edit]

Seikendo (sei = correct, ken = health, do = way. The way of correct health) is the healing art of Seibukan Jujutsu. This art blends Western and traditional Oriental medicine. It is a synthesis of the various healing arts Shiatsu (Japanese finger pressure therapy), basic massage, meridian therapy, physical therapy, subtle energies, Chi Kung (a Chinese healing art cultivating the body’s internal energy), and theories of Oriental medicine.

Seikendo training and certification is exclusively for Seibukan Jujutsu black-belt students with the rank of Shodan and above.
