Naval Monument Honouring Those Lost in the Battle of the Atlantic

The Battle of the Atlantic Memorial is a federally registered military memorial. It is a stunning and moving memorial, created with extreme gratitude, for those who made the supreme sacrifice and whose final resting places cannot be marked by graves. The memorial stands on the grass hillside at HMCS Prevost, (Canadian Naval Reserve Division) in London, Ontario. The hillside is approximately 500 meters long and bears a 'convoy' of 25 granite stones which form the memorial. Each of the 25 stones are engraved with the name of a Royal Canadian Navy ship which was lost during the Battle of the Atlantic. The date that each ship was lost is also engraved. There is also a stone honouring the sacrifice of those lost in the Merchant Navy. These stones will be strategically placed according to the date of their sinking. Walking at the base of the hillside you will begin with HMCS Fraser in June of 1940 and end with HMCS Esquimalt in April of 1945.

The monument was dedicated on what is the traditional Battle of the Atlantic Sunday, the first Sunday in May. Dedication was 2 May, 2010. The memorial is open to the public from 8am to 4pm. The address for HMCS Prevost is 19 Becher Street, London, Ontario N6C 1A4. 510 660-5296.
