From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Death of a baby during delivery is the death of a child during its birth. Some deaths during delivery are considered stillbirths,[a] often when they're considered unpreventable or not caused by external factors, other deaths during childbirth may be regarded as accidents, negligent or homicide.

Statistics

[edit]

The Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society states that "Around 500 babies die every year because of a trauma or event during birth that was not anticipated or well managed. Some babies are stillborn and some die after birth. Many of these deaths, when they occur at term, could be avoided with better care."[1]

In medical settings

[edit]

[2] In July 2023 another case of decapitation (this time with the baby in normal position) resulted in a medical examiner ruling the event as a homicide in February 2024.[3]

Notes

[edit]
  1. ^ Stillbirth also includes births of fetuses which have died before the onset of labor after a pregnancy has advanced to 20 weeks. Before 20 weeks the expulsion of a fetus or embryo is considered a miscarriage.
