Dead Rock (stylized in all caps) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hiro Mashima. It has been serialized in Kodansha's Monthly Shōnen Magazine since July 2023, with its chapters collected in two tankōbon volumes as of April 2024.

Synopsis

[edit]

Dead Rock is an academy where denizens of the demon world are trained to conquer the human world as demon kings. Yakuto, an unassuming demon boy with the roots of a black dragon, is one of seven out of one thousand applicants who survive the school's deadly special entrance exam into Class F. On his first day of class, Yakuto brutally murders his homeroom teacher and reveals his ambition to kill God, a supreme evil being who serves as Dead Rock's principal.

Characters

[edit]
Yakuto (ヤクト)
A young Dragon Root demon whose people were exterminated by God. As the son of one of God's personal guards, Yakuto believes God to be an imposter and plots to kill him in revenge. Due to a curse placed on him, he has the ability to transform into a black dragon at the cost of reducing his lifespan.
Frey (フレイ, Furei)
A demon who enrolls in Dead Rock to surpass and avenge her older sister, who failed to graduate from the school. She has an Ifrit root, which allows her to manipulate fire.
Raizen (ライゼン)
A demon swordsman who seeks to lift a curse on his sword, "Princess", which is his most cherished possession. His root is an Orochi, and he can create seven duplicates of his weapon.
Hien (ヒエン)
A wolf-eared demon and lord's son who aims to save his homeland from an eternal winter his people are wrongly accused of causing. He is descended from Fenrir, giving him ice powers that freeze anything he cuts with his katana.
Mikoto (ミコト)
A necromancer demon with a Lich root who reanimates and controls the dead as zombies.
Hani (ハニー, Hanī)
A living haniwa giant who prefers to study humans rather than conquer them. Descended from Thor, god of thunder, he is able to shrink to human size and wields a hammer imbued with lightning.
Zelecia (ゼレシア, Zereshia) / Chako (チャコ)
A demon who, like Yakuto, wishes to kill God. She suppresses her power by disguising herself as a talking crow with a Yatagarasu root; her true form is a cat-eared humanoid with a Black Wizard root that allows her to use black magic.
