This is an essay. It contains the advice or opinions of one or more Wikipedia contributors. This page is not an encyclopedia article, nor is it one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community. Some essays represent widespread norms; others only represent minority viewpoints. |
One of the small advantages that wikipedia editors, have over the vandals and the spammers are the admin tools, notably, the protect and the block. These tools, along with the ability to run bots are the only difference that wikipedia's editors have.
It is important that this advantage is used to its full ability to help improve the encyclopedia. As such Wikipedia is best served with around 50% of its active editors as admins. The current percentage of active editors who are admins is currently unknown due to difficulties getting an accurate count of current editors, however it appears to be significantly less then half, probably closer to around 15%. While adminship should be no big deal, in actuality it is treated as if it is so currently this percentage is unlikely to grow.
However, denying so many people the ability to use the admin tools is doing the encyclopedia more harm than good. There is no reason to suspect that anything bad would happen as a result of this, so the more admins the better of Wikipedia is, and the more protected it is from attacks from elsewhere.
