AGENEBODE

Agenebode is a town in Nigeria, located by the banks of river Niger in Edo state of Nigeria; It is also the headquarter of Etsakor-East council, and the traditional capital of Weppa Wanno Kingdom.

Agenebode people speak the Afemai/Etsako language with weppa wanno dialect.

Agenebode is a very important town in Nigeria, as it was the regional headquarter of the Royal Niger Company, a mercantile company owned by the British Colonialist.

Agenebode is divided into different quarters, these are Ighaewo,Egbado,Otoukwe,igegbode(upland) as a result of the gradual development of Agenebode town, the town has now spread towards Emokweme.

Agenebode is bounded by Egor, Ivioghe,Emokweme, and River Niger. Agenebode people are Weppa Wanno people, and the city is the homeland to all Weppa Wanno people both at home and in the Diaspora. Though Weppa Wanno comprises of about 20 villages, the entire Weppa Wanno people see Agenebode as their home city.

Despite various rivalries amongst different Kinship groups that make up Weppa Wanno,the people still see themselves collectively as one.

The traditional ruler of Weppa Wanno kingdom is called the 'Okumagbe' which can be translated as the 'unifier'. The stool of the Okumagbe is rotated among the five kinship groups.

Agenebode people are Christians of the catholic faith, this is because the Roman Catholic Church first abode was at Agenebode, that was in 1882, although there are also few Moslems and traditional worshippers.

Interesting sites in Agenebode are the post office built in 1930, the Colonial Court on Mission Road, the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Local Council office, The Army Barracks, General Hospital, Niger Valley Farms, River Niger Banks etc.

Agenebode also has some educational institutions the recent being the College of Agriculture, that is about to take off in the Town.

Agenebode as a town has many secondary and primary schools, prominent amongst these schools are the St.Peters Grammer School, Army Day Secondary School, and Catholic Secondary School etc.

Main means of transport in Agenebode is by Motorcycles, buses and cars. Agenebode town is a very nice place to visit, as its inhabiotants are very friendly, kind and warm to visitors.
