It is called prokaryotic or prokaryote cells without defined cell nucleus, ie whose genetic material is dispersed in the cytoplasm, gathered in an area called nucleoid. By contrast, cells that do have a distinct nucleus from the cytoplasm, called eukaryotes, ie those whose DNA is within a separate compartment from the rest of the cell.
