Voluntary Evolution is the theory that technology is an extension of human evolution, intended for humans to gain cognitive control over their genes.
Originally, humans have had limited voluntary control over their environments, and as a consequence they have built tools which increase dexterity. By controlling nanotechnology with cognition, humans can express gene sequences on thought alone.
Or perhaps a person wishes to change their phenotype; a person wishes to change their eye color to brown, they only need to think about having brown eyes, and then nanobots will detect the signal and adjust the eye color pigments. This same example can be applied to genetics.
