From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Titanik Gallery is a contemporary art gallery established in 1988, located in Turku, Finland. In addition to its year-round exhibitions, the gallery hosts several other art happenings such as festivals, seminars, concerts, screenings and performances. Titanik also organises a popular artist-run art school project, Super Public Art School (SPAS), once-twice a year. All happenings and exhibitions are free of charge. Titanik Gallery is up-kept by a local artist organisation Arte ry.[1]

Functions[edit]

The exhibitions of Titanik Gallery are divided into two biannual themes but the gallery also accepts applications for more spontaneous projects. The usage of the biannual theme policy first started in 2010 and it was warmly welcomed in the local art scene. All exhibitions and projects are chosen by a committee of members of Arte as well as third party professionals. Titanik has hosted exhibitions from topical Finnish artists such as Anssi Kasitonni (2008), Elina Brotherus (2010) and Jaakko Pallasvuo (2012). [1]

Residency Programme[edit]

The Titanik residency programme was launched in 2006 and functions in the gallery space in the city centre. The focus of the residency changed from the broad aspect of media art to be more concentrated in sound art as artists working with sound did not yet have their own separate residency programmes in Finland. The length of the residency varies from one to three months. The artists chosen for the programme are selected by a committee of the members of Arte and a guestmember from the Turku Art Museum. Arte ry upkeeping Titanik-gallery is a member of Res Artis- artist residency association.[1]
