History

[edit]

The European Parliament Ambassador Schools programme (EPAS) is an educational programme for schools and colleges in the European Union and the United Kingdom run by the European Parliament.[1][2] It was created in 2015 by Klaus Welle, the secretary general of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2022, as part of his efforts to tackle the growing political alienation of the European youth with the original aim of increasing their support for the European Union and encouraging an increased youth voter turnout in the 2019 European Parliament election.[3][4][5] The programme was trialled in the countries of Spain, Poland, Italy, Germany, France, Malta and Ireland for the 2015–2016 academic year, before being officially launched in the rest of the EU's member states in 2016.[6][7]
