Offline, this is when Smcafirst is away from Wikipedia. He maybe having a Wikibreak (probability <0.01%), or doing homework, or sleeping, or eating. Leave a message if needed be. He will work on it as soon as he comes back.
Away, this is an amber alert. Smcafirst is probably starting a new article or major editing that will make a significant change to Wikipedia. PLEASE, never bother him, as it would be unwised to do so. Check his To-Do List, he has lots to work on. Add a request will be sufficient. Browse other stuff, like other articles, or his cool userboxes, or the friends list, whatever.
Fluctuating, this means when Smcafirst is both editing and doing something else, like researching. Sometimes, this also means that Smcafirst might take off and have a little walk in the nearby neighbourhoods. So, you interpret what does that means
Online, this is when Smcafirst is online but nothing else to do but minor editing. You could well utilize this time to discuss things with him and request him to do something to keep him occupied. Smcafirst is always monitoring the talk page to give you full information!
