Chumel Torres is a Mexican YouTube personality, comedian and news reporter. He hosts his youtube channel, El Pulso de la República, and his TV show, Chumel Torres con Chumel on HBO.

Life[edit]

Chumel Torres was born José Manuel Torres on 1982 in Chihuahua, México, [1] where he lived and worked as an engineer in a medical appliances manufacturing facility. He moved to Mexico City in 2014 where he started getting jobs as an editor in different political columns, and where he created he's own.[2] He still resides in Mexico City and is not known to be in a relationship. [3]

Career[edit]

In 2012 he featured Mexican news when he criticized presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Twitter, since this made him famous, he started writing columns for a political portal called Animal Político. [4] After his column became a success, and inspired by political analysis done by John Oliver, Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart, Chumel decided to create a YouTube channel called El Pulso de la República. The channel was initially inspired by an interview made by Mexican comedian Andrés Bustamante "Ponchito" to Subcomandante Marcos, [5]in which Chumel would upload a news show that was funny and satirical, similar to the ones Colbert and Stewart do every week, with help from his cowriter, Durden. [6] Since 2012 when the channel opened, it has gained more than a million subscribers and gains 60,000 likes every three days. The channel uploads a news show every Monday and Thursday and has its own app for Android, iOS, Blackberry and Windows Phone. [7]

After almost 4 years of working solely in his YouTube channel and refusing offers from many TV stations, HBO offered him a TV show of his own called Chumel with Chumel Torres, making him the first Mexican blogger to have his own space on a TV prime time show. [8] [9] In an interview with Maxim magazine, Chumel says that he did not accept any offers from other TV stations and channels because they would control all of his content and he hated that and the reason why he accepted the late night show on HBO is because it made sense to him and they offered complete creative freedom. And affirms that if in any moment the channel would like to control any of his content he would quit it. [10] The show premiered on July 22nd and it airs every Friday on HBO and HBO Go.[11]

Other ventures and Prizes[edit]

In 2016, Chumel was voice actor on movie The Secret Life of Pets, giving voice in Spanish to Buddy.[12] Also on 2016, he was the first YouTube personality to win the National Periodismo Award [13] and Break in News award on the Eliot Awards. [14]
