Kostas Simitis

An indirect Prime Ministerial election took place within PASOK's Parliamentary group after Andreas Papandreou's resignation from the office of the Prime Minister of Greece on 18 January 1996.

Effectively an internal vote within the Parliamentary group over the temporary successor of Andreas Papandreou to the Prime Ministership, with himself holding on to the leadership of PASOK proper.

Kostas Simitis won a majority on the second round of voting with 86 votes (out of 167) and assumed the office of Prime Minister four days later, on the 22nd of January.
