First 'tram'

[edit]

Having just read the argument about what to call these useful railed road vehicles, I'm glad someone is taking this article in hand!

Apart from nomenclature, there is another issue which would benefit from being clarified: where was first with what? At the moment, the article appears to make the following claims of firstness, in order (I hope) as you read the article:

  • first tram - Baltimore 1828 (horse)
  • first tram in Europe - Sarajevo 1885
  • first electric tram - Berlin 1881 (Siemens)
  • first overhead electric tram - Richmond, VA, 1888 (Sprague)
  • first tram - Budapest 1887
  • first tram - New York 1832

Now these might all be true in some way, but at least 4 of them must be wrong as currently formulated. (For my money the Sarajevo, Budapest and New York claims are over-optimistic for a start.)

And no one has yet mentioned the 'tramway' at Causey Arch in County Durham (UK), yet...
