The Bachkovo Monastery of the Dormition of the Mother of God (Bulgarian: Бачковски манастир „Успение Богородично“, Bachkovski manastir „Uspenie Bogorodichno“), in medieval times known as the Monastery of the Mother of God Petritzonitissa or the Petritsoni Monastery (Georgian: პეტრიწონის მონასტერი, Petritsonis Monasteri), is one of the three stauropegic monasteries of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and the second-largest monastery in Bulgaria. It lies in the northern reaches of the Rhodope Mountains by the village of Bachkovo, which is part of Plovdiv Province in the south central part of the country.

Founded in 1083 by the Byzantine politician and military commander of Caucasian origin Gregory Pakourianos...

Location and surroundings[edit]

The Bachkovo Monastery is located in the valley of the Chepelare River,[1] 1.5 kilometres (0.93 miles) south[2] of the village of Bachkovo. The village itself lies 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) south of the town of Asenovgrad in the northern reaches of the Rhodope Mountains.[3] The nearest major city is Plovdiv, which is 30 kilometres (19 mi) to the north.[4] An upward path surrounded by stalls selling souvenirs and local products leads to the entrance of the monastery.[1]
